1.4.1 AUTOMATIC (indirect) BRAKE

Selection of the “RP1” valve of the automatic brake

The trailer automatic brake is controlled from the tractor VMT 865 GR (or any different vehicle with
braking system compatible with the trailer system) by the pressure variations in the main brake pipe
and the « RP1 » valve allows the selection of the correct braking value based on the transported load.

N.B.: The « RP1 » valve of the automatic brake can work in four different positions
permitting to adapt the braking performances (pressure in the brake cylinders) to the
trailer load:
Trailer brake with load:
« RP1 » valve in « Empty » position = trailer with load from 0 to 16 t (pressure range =
0 ÷ 1.6 bar in the brake cylinders).
« RP1 » valve in « Loaded » position = trailer with load from 16 to 20 t ( pressure range
= 0 ÷ 3,4 bar in the brake cylinders).

Trailer with isolated brake:

1. « RP1 » valve in « Off duty » position = trailer with isolated brake.
The automatic brake acts on all the towed vehicles (if coupled in convoy) but not
on the trailer with isolated brake (trough main brake pipe).
2. Isolate the distributor of the wagon; close the cock R2 on the distributor. In this
configuration, is required to positionate the trailer at the tail of the convoy.

When the trailer is in isolated brake condition (trough brake pipe

or brake pipe not connected) it’s considered like a non-braked
mass and it is necessary to take account of it in the braking
performance calculation of the convoy. It is a configuration that
has generally to be avoided. In configuration trailer with brake
pipe not connected is required to position the trailer at the tail of
the convoy.

Ref : 6142 16
rev.00
R 20 T

1.4.2 EMERGENCY BRAKE

The trailer’s emergency brake is essentially constituted of a cock “R1” that is operate on a side of the
trailer.

The cock “R1” makes the air in the main brake pipe exhaust rapidly. It make also the trailer stop
immediately (emergency brake).

If it is necessary to disconnect the trailer from the tractor on

gradient track, the trailer can be braked by opening the "emergency
brake" cock « R1 » to prevent the trailer from moving.

rev.00
R 20 T

1.4.3 PARKING BRAKE

The parking brake is operated mechanically by the hand wheel on the two sides of the trailer frame. If
case of protracted stop, the parking brake is operated.
Turn the hand wheel completely clockwise in order to engage the parking brake (make sure all the
brake shoes are in contact with the wheels).
Turn the hand wheel completely anticlockwise in order to release the parking brake (make sure all the
brake shoes are released).

2.2.2 BRAKE SHOE ADJUSTMENT

The brake shoe acts on the wheel every time compressed air is applied to the unit. The brake-action
terminates when air is discharged from the air inlet. The brake shoe is carried back by the force of an
internal spring.
Verify the allowance of the different organs, stay, connecting rod, etc., and the shoes conditions.
In released brake position, the shoes must come close to the wheels, but not to block them.
Make sure the clearance between the wheels and brake shoes is at least 5 mm and 30 mm at most
(general).
Check and adjust the shoes by following these instructions:
ƒ Put the blocks in front of the wheels to prevent the trailer from moving (if the trailer is not coupled
to the track motor car);
ƒ Release the trailer’s automatic brake (move the « RP1 » valve towards « Off duty » position);
ƒ Release the trailer’s parking brake;
ƒ Make sure the shoes are not in contact with the wheels;
ƒ Push one of the brake shoes against the wheel and measure « A » on the opposite side. The
measure must be between 5 and 30 mm. If « A » is out of the indicated range, adjust in this way:
ƒ Unscrew the locknuts « C »;
ƒ Reset the slack adjuster « B » in order to obtain a minimum clearance « A » of about 5 mm;
ƒ Lock the locknuts « C »;
ƒ Perform the procedure for the brake rigging adjustment on both axles;
ƒ Replace the brake shoes when the max. limit wear is 15 mm;
ƒ Apply the parking brake and remove the blocks from the wheels.

Brake Shoe Replacement

Generally brake shoes do not require any special maintenance routine between scheduled overhaul.
Anyway it is recommended to verify the maximum permitted measure during the visual inspection or
ordinary overhaul of the track motor car (max. admissible shoes wear = 15 mm).

Brake Shoe Renewal

ƒ Put the blocks in front of the wheels to prevent the trailer from moving (if the trailer is not coupled
to the track motor car);
ƒ Release the trailer’s automatic brake (move the « RP1 » valve towards « Off duty » position);
ƒ Release the trailer’s parking brake;
ƒ Make sure the shoes are not in contact with wheels;
ƒ Unscrew the locknuts « C » and act on the tie bar « B » in order to disassemble the shoe;
ƒ Remove the pin « E » and replace the worn shoe with a new similar one;
ƒ Reinsert the pin « E » and make sure it is housed properly;
ƒ Push one of the brake shoes against the wheel and measure « A » on the opposite side. This
measure must be between 5 and 30 mm. Adjust "A" by acting on the tie bar « B » until the value
« A » is of about 5 mm;
ƒ Lock the locknuts « C »;
ƒ Perform the procedure for the brake rigging adjustment on both axles;
ƒ Apply and release the automatic brake for a few times and make sure the shoe assembly has
been performed correctly;
ƒ Check the shoe clearance (« A » value) again.

Pneumatic components and threshold of function

(Drg N° 049.007.610.00 e1)
The pneumatic system is constituted of:
ƒ A feeding line for the pneumatic indirect brake (automatic);
ƒ A pneumatic emergency brake device (manual cock);
ƒ Two brake cylinders, one per axle;
ƒ A main brake pipe (BP) with half-coupling.
The pneumatic system group is designed to guarantee the maximum security and ductility of using,
both with loaded trailer and unloaded trailer.

Connection/continuity of the main brake pipe (BP)

The production and treatment air unit is installed on the VMT 865 GR tractor motor car (the brake
system of any other tractor vehicle must be consistent with the trailer’s brake system).
The half-couplings (5) are connected to the cocks R3, R4 (3) and are positioned on the headstocks to
assure the continuity of the main brake pipe (BP) in case of train forming (trailer braking or trailer with
isolated brake and through main brake pipe).
The main brake pipe supplies the brake circuit’s pipes:
ƒ Indirect brake - Emergency brake
The brake rigging assures the brake-action of the trailer on each axle, by acting on the brake shoes
(two shoes per wheel) that are actuated by the brake-cylinders.

Automatic brake and emergency brake

The main brake pipe of the trailer is connected to the brake distributor (9). This one supplies the
auxiliary tank and the emergency reservoir (11) and the air-supply tank (10).
The distributor (9) and the check valve (8) detect the variation of air pressure in the main brake pipe. It
controls the movements of the brake-cylinders automatically and proportionally by means of the relay
valve (13) (it is activated by the filling of the levelling tank (7), proportionally to the emptying of the
auxiliary and emergency tanks (11)). The air supply of the brake-cylinders occurs by means of the air-
supply reservoir (10).
The braking valve RP1 (4) permits to select two different brake working pressures (“EMPTY – HALF
LOAD” position) according to the trailer’s load. The “HALF LOAD” position of the braking valve RP1 (4)
corresponds to the full load of the trailer.
The “OFF DUTY” valve position is used when the trailer is towed with isolated brake (useful in case of
brake-cylinder failure). Besides it is necessary to isolate the distributor (9) by means of the cock R2
(12) and to empty out the reservoirs of the system by operating the release valve “VE” placed on the
distributor (9).
The emergency brake cock R1 (6) is located on one side of the trailer frame. Once it is activated, it
makes the pressure in the main brake pipe discharge in the air immediately.

Brake-cylinders
The trailer is provided with two brake-cylinders (1), one per axle.
