In the news
College closure is announced
BURTON Manor College is to close this spring.
The adult education college has fallen
victim to budget cutbacks at Liverpool City
Council.
Press reports suggest that the college is
£1.6m in debt and that last year the city
council pumped in £284,000 to subsidise the
venue which offers all manner of day and
residential courses.
Ironically, Burton doesn’t even lie within the
boundaries of Liverpool City Council. Once
the harsh government settlement came in, it
became inevitable that Burton Manor would
come under the spotlight.
Council officials are now considering what to do with the grade II listed building which
was originally the home of Henry Neville Gladstone, the third son of former British
Prime Minister William Gladstone.
The college will finally close its doors on 31st March, although it has promised to fulfil
courses up to that date.

Burton is the
backdrop for
new movie
Locally made film Prelude to Macbeth had its world premiere at the Gladstone
Village Hall, on Saturday 29th January.
The film will go on to do the rounds of UK and international film competitions and
festivals.
Based on a prize-winning stage play, the film version with a running time of one
hour, was directed by Sue Bence and produced by Neston film maker James
Chalmers.
The actors and extras are from the Wirral and Cheshire and much of the shooting
was done locally, with St Nicholas’s Church, in Burton village, playing an important
role as a castle interior. The director suggested that it would be fitting to give the film
its first screening in Burton’s own village hall.
Peckforton Castle, near Beeston, was used to provide a suitable view of a distant
castle plus closer shots of its towers. The action then moves to the interior scenes
which were provided by four locations within the church.
The matching red sandstone of Burton church and Peckforton makes the whole
thing gel together more convincingly. James was quick to praise the church warden
Tony Carter whose help included stopping the tower clock when filming was taking
place to avoid the ticking being picked up by the microphone!
