EXPLORE
Direction: Deteremine whether the statement indicates the importance of elements.
Write “Yes” if the statement indicates the importance and “No” if it’s not.
_________1. Elements make up the matter of a human body.
_________2. Elements helps prevent some deficiencies.
_________3. Elements makes our body develop diseases.
_________4. Elements constitute bulk of our diet.
_________5. All elements have the same properties and roles in our daily life.

LEARN
Compound: Properties of Compounds

A compound has unique

properties that are distinct from the
properties of its elemental
constituents. One familiar chemical
compound is water, a liquid that is
nonflammable and does not
support combustion. It is composed
of two elements: hydrogen, an extremely flammable gas, and oxygen, a gas that
supports combustion.

Example: Water (H2O) is a compound made

up of two elements, hydrogen and oxygen which
are chemically combined.

Chemical Structure of Water

The properties of compounds are different from the properties of the elements
that form them—sometimes very different. That’s because elements in a compound
combine and become an entirely different substance with its own unique properties.
Do you put salt on your food? Table salt is the compound sodium chloride. It contains
sodium and chlorine. As shown in the Figure below, sodium is a solid that reacts
explosively with water, and chlorine is a poisonous gas. But together in table salt,
sodium and chlorine form a harmless unreactive compound that you can safely eat.

Characteristics of a Compound

1. In a compound constituents are present in definite proportion by mass.

2. The properties of a compound are different from the properties of its

constituents.
3. The constituents of a compound cannot be separated by simple physical
processes.

4. Formation of a compound is generally accompanied by evolution of

energy in the form of heat or light.

5. A compound has a fixed melting point and boiling point.

6. A compound is always homogeneous in nature.

ENGAGE
Direction: List your learnings about the properties of compounds in the diagram
below.

Properties

APPLY
Direction: Encircle the best answer
1. What is compound?
a. A pure chemical substance made of two or more different chemical elements,
containing a fixed ratio of atoms.
b. A pure chemical substance made of two or more atoms.
c. A pure chemical substance made of two or more identical chemical
elements.
d. A pure chemical substance made of two or more different chemical elements,
containing a variable ratio of atoms.
2. Which of the following statement best describe the properties of a compound?
a. a compound has the same properties with its constituents.
b. a compound has a unique property from the elements that have been joined
chemically.
c. a compound has the same properties with the elements that have been
joined together.
d. A compound is always a heterogeneous in nature.
3. Why is that properties of compounds different from the properties of the
elements that form them?
a. It’s because elements in a compound combine and become an entirely
different substance with its own unique properties
b. It’s because elements in a compound combine and become an entirely the
same substance with its same properties.
c. It’s because they are designed to be like that
d. All of the above
4. Which of the following compounds is water?
a. NaCl
b. H2O
c. CH4
d. Co2
5. Manong Tonyo bought a table salt, he knows that the chemical formula for salt
is NaCl. He notices that the physical property of the salt is different from
hydrogen and chlorine. What is the reason behind this?
a. Compounds form a unique characteristic and properties due to chemical
reactions.
b. Compounds form a unique characteristic and properties due to
abnormalities of the element.
c. Compounds form a unique characteristic and properties due to the
properties of its constituents.
d. None of the above
