CURRENT STATUS OF

This report is on the current status of construction of Academic block in NIT

Andhra

Pradesh. The academic block is under constructions from inside but the outside
framework
already stands strong with a layer of white coating .The construction has been done
based on

modern method known as Flat Slab Construction or Precast Concrete

Foundation, which is

basically a process in which the 3d model of the slab or each wall is already made and
pre baked

and cooled. All that needs to be done was assembling and providing it with rigid
joints. The

internal layer of tile has been placed to some extent. The pace of construction is
considerably

fast, because they need to start academics and the other activities for first- and
second-year

students by next semester. As the deadline is close the worker are working day night to
complete

this project on
time.

1. INTRODUCTION

The construction of academic block had started in 2018 according to plan

allotted by the

government the construction came into enforcement when the Supreme court
started taking

matter seriously. The foundation rock was laid by the reputed ex-central HRD
minister Smriti

Irani. The construction rate has increased from July 2019. There are going to be four
replications

of this building in the phase two

construction.

This project is being made keeping in mind that it should be able to hold classes
for almost

500-700 students. Consisting approximate of 50 rooms including classrooms,

staffrooms and

other administrative purpose related rooms. The Academic block is made, keeping in
mind the

needs of all the first-year students and faculty

requirement.

2. ACADEMIC BLOCK

2.1. Color
Scheme

The Academic block from exterior is going to be a

combination of

• Yellow

• Cream white

• Pink

Whereas from inside it will be plain white in color, the tiles will be an extension of
white and
cream. Even the grills and the windowpane are white in
color.

2.2. Method of
Construction

The method which was used for this large-scale construction is Precast
Concrete

Foundation. This process is employed for the rapid construction of foundation. This
method is

more a bespoke
design.

The elements required for the construction of foundation are constructed

separately in the

factory (off site) and brought to the site and assembled. The manufactured product
must have the

assured quality as specified by the

designer.

The foundation assembled is mainly supported by concrete piles. During

assembling, both

the systems are connected. These foundation systems help in increasing the
productivity,

increase quality, decrease the soil excavation

quantity.
This is best suited for extreme and adverse weather conditions. When the
construction is

dealt on a highly contaminated ground, this system of construction is a

best choice.

2.3. Workers
Employed

The number of workers employed for the completion of this project are around 70.
A crane

was also provided to help them place the slabs of concrete in right place. This was
supervised at

many stages for the accurate and on time completion of the project. Currently
they have

decreased the number of workers as only painting and tiling work are
pending.

2.4. Stages of
Construction

Stage
1

The concrete was transported into the campus at temporary layout for
factory, where

molding, blasting, cooling and drying will be done. Here the precast is made
and kept

until required for construction. The temporary layout is at a central zone where
the crane

can transport it to the construction

area.

Stage
2

A big pit was dug at the construction site of Academic block, where the
strength and

support bars will be placed. Which is important for rigidity and hence now we
had strong

base for the foundation

placement.

Stage
3

Then the transportation of the precast to the construction site is done and at the
same time

it is placed with accuracy with the help of a crane and workers. This is a long
process as

the joints of all the precast must be connected and cemented properly. After
this process

is completed, we have a basic structure to

work on.

Stage
4
Now the weather coating from inside and outside needs to be done. Then
further we

whitewash the whole surface. And with a little finishing this stage is
completed.

Stage
5

This is the stage where the interior is taken into consideration, the tiling
and water

proofing of the washrooms are done. The windowpane is placed in the slot for
window,

final washing is done before

painting.

Stage
6

In this stage a final quality check is done. We ensure the safety feature by
checking wall

thickness, artificial weather testing, and others. Then we go with rectification if

any error.

And finally, we complete it by

painting.

2.5. Current status

The current status of the work is at stage 6, now the workers are placing
rigid foam

insulation in the building. Rigid foam is made up of materials including

polyisocyanurate,

extruded polystyrene and expanded polystyrene are valued for their insulation
properties.

The windowpane and some quality checks are already done, a layer of
whitewash

has also been coated both inside and outside. The work pending are the ones
which will

make the Academic block look

beautiful.

The construction is at its final stage and even its deadline is just around
the corner,

if everything is fine including the weather elements then the construction

will be

completed before the

deadline.

2.6. Cost

Including worker wages, raw materials, construction vehicles and

transportation

charges the whole projected costed around 7.5 – 8 crores. There was a
little extra

expenditure than expected because of delayed time and extra

insulation.

3. CONCLUSION

Even after so many constructions challenge the project will be

successfully

completed before the deadline. The weather has been a troubling factor and a
prominent

reason for delay. But keeping this all aside the project is very close to
completion with

minimal construction errors. The cost was also not a big flip. Henceforth
hoping the

project will be
successful.
