Cultures Courtship/Marriage Practices

Filipino Culture The Filipino culture courtship and marriage must happen on the spot or
personally such as singing a romantic song and it is called "Harana",
writing love letters, and gift-giving. In terms of male suitor, he needs to
give all of his effort probably to the family of the female. Therefore,
after you give all of your efforts the female or the family accepts you as
his part of the family.
American Culture The courtship and marriage in America is probably acceptable to their
traditions. However, when you a American Citizen at your age of 18
years old without the consent from their parents you can marry your
boyfriend or girlfriend. Therefore, it is legal from the American culture
though it is a religious country.
Chinese Culture Chinese courtship begins with a gift from the gods. Soul mates for life,
a Chinese man and woman will one day find themselves face to face.
However, it takes a lot more than fate, including matchmakers,
astrologers, and auspicious dates. Indeed, a traditional Chinese
courtship is perhaps one of the most elaborate and ritualized rite of
passage in the world.
Muslim Culture The Muslim courtship and marriage is one of the popular it should be
watch on television, and study about their respective cultures. However,
the parents of the female want to marry their daughter occasionally to
an old man and it depends on her family. When both families agree to
marry their son or daughter the wedding must happen.
Nigerian Culture The courtship and marriage in Nigeria have a different traditions such
as the monogamy means a marriage between man and woman thus the
polygyny means a marriage of one man to two or more wives.
However, in most cultural groups in Nigeria, the traditional marriage is
usually an arrangement between two families as opposed to an
arrangement between a man and a woman.
1. In general, what did you learn about the courtship/marriage practices of these
different cultures?
For me, I’ve learned already about the courtship/marriage practices of different
countries such as the way of pairing their daughter or son to get married.
However, each country has a different perspective regarding courtship/marriage
practices because each country has beliefs in life and sometimes we know that
their beliefs are not acceptable to our country though the similarities or point of
each country are specifically to marry their daughter or son.

2. How will it influence you in trying to understand your “self’?

I think in terms of understanding myself, like the different cultures that we
discussed, each person has different characteristics, though you can understand
yourself regarding your capability as an individual and to know your true identity
through interacting with other people. Therefore, other people can not determine
your characteristics because as an individual you should have your own
understanding about yourself.
