COURSE CODE: CMP309 COURSE TITLE: DATABASE DESIGN AND
MANAGEMENT
UNITS: 3 SEMESTERS: FIRST SESSION: 2020/2021
A. COURSE DESCRIPTION:
The Database Design and Management course introduces students to the basic database design
concepts, models and practices. It also introduces students to the Structured Query Language
(SQL). It instils in students the ability to design databases following standard methods and tools.
B. LEARNING OBJECTIVES
 Introduces students to the database design concepts and models
 Introduces students to the Structured Query Language
 Teaches students how to design databases following standard design methods
 Teaches students how to create databases using a Database Management System (DBMS)
 Teaches students how to query a database using selected queries

C. LEARNING OUTCOMES
 Students will be able to design databases using standard methods and models
 Students will be able to create databases using a DBMS
 Students will be able to query databases using SQL

F. CLASSROOM POLICY
 Punctuality to classes is non-negotiable
 Students are at liberty to ask questions
 Eating during lectures is prohibited
 No use of handset during lecture periods
 All class assignments MUST be submitted on schedule
 Students must ensure that they sign attendance register on every lecture attended
 
G. COURSE OUTLINE
Design issues in current database management system (DBMS), Relational Model and
Normalization network, and hierarchical data models. Data definition language. Data
manipulation languages. Data control language. Schemas, query processing, database system
architecture. Integrity, concurrency, and security techniques. Storage management and access,
encryption and decryption. Distributed database, operation and administration of databases,
including database creation, account maintenance, data import and export, system backup, and
performance tuning. Hands on experience administering any of the following DBMS: Oracle,
MYSQL, MS-SQL. Database.
