Prayer Guide

For
Muslim Kids
Foreword

Assalamu Alaykum! Kids!

Salah or Prayer is one of the pillars of Islam and it is an

obligation for Muslims to perform it as to what Allah (swt)
has ordered, as it is also an act for us to communicate
with him by asking and thanking him.
In this book you will be discovering and learning about
what is prayer in Islam. This will guide you and help you
on how to properly perform and what to prepare in doing
the Salah (Prayer) and ablution as early as now. Through
this book you will also be able to understand the
importance of doing the Ablution before doing the Salah
(Prayer). This book also intends to help you in memorizing
some verses of Surah from the Qur’an that you can use
while praying, and also, help you memorize and remember
the steps, what to follow and things that you need to know
in performing the before and after of the prayer.
The Things We Need Before Prayer
What to wear and use in prayer

“Girls should cover your “Boys should cover their

body except your face navel to their knees.”
and hands.”
You have to make sure to dress appropriately by wearing
clothes or any material that will cover the necessary parts
of your body or what we call awrah so that the prayer you
perform will be accepted by Allah (swt).
Fact: You can use a mat, cloth, or prayer rug in praying.

Why you need to be clean

The Cleanliness in your:
1. Clothes
2. Place of worship
3. Body
In Islam, cleanliness is important as it is a part of faith.
Before in starting the prayer, you must be clean and tidy
with your body, in what you wear and where you perform
your prayer. As cleanliness is also a path in becoming a
healthy and strong Muslim so you must; take a bath
regularly, brush your teeth, change your clothes, clean
and sweep the house and place of worship, in that way
Allah will reward you for doing good deeds and praying
clean.
Fact: Prayer also helps you to be more hygienic with your
body and the surroundings!

What you need during prayer:

 Concentration
Salah is very important in every Muslim’s life and when
you give concentration in performing it, you are able to
understand and know the real meaning of Salah. You
need concentration as you are facing Allah and
communicating with him with your full presence and
heart, you need to remind yourself that Allah is listening
attentively to every word you say while praying. By
giving your full attention to Allah he will hear all that you
ask and say to him such as saying your thank you’s and
asking for forgiveness.

What you must not do during prayer:

 Doing Extra Movements
Such are:
1. Playing
2. Talking
3. Shouting
4. Looking around
5. Laughing or giggling
In praying you should put your heart into it, be sincere
and focus only Allah as you are talking to him, and you
are prohibited from doing other movements is to also
not disturb the others who are also praying with
concentration and also to your own prayer.
The direction of prayer
In Islam, the direction or Qibla of our prayer is from the
Holy Ka’bah and the Holy Ka’bah is located in Makkah.

The time for prayer

In Islam we perform Salah five times a day which are the:
 Salat al-fajr: dawn, before sunrise
 Salat al-zuhr: midday, after the sun passes its highest
 Salat al-'asr: the late part of the afternoon
 Salat al-maghrib: just after sunset
 Salat al-'isha: between sunset and midnight

You also have to pray at the proper time as there are 5

and each has a specific period of time on when to perform
it.

Where you can pray

 At Home
 Mosque
 Anywhere as long as you are facing the Qibla and
that the place is generally clean or if not you can you
use a mat and you can place it in any surfaces such
as grass, sand, concrete, or the floor.
How to Make Wudu, Step by Step

What is Wudu?
Before we can perform Salah we need to prepare
ourselves mentally, physically, and spiritually. A large
portion of this preparation is what is known as wudu. It is a
purification process that every Muslim must perform
before their prayer can be performed.
It is such an important part of the Salah that if anyone
decides to leave it due to ignorance, forgetfulness, or
negligence then their prayer will not be accepted by Allah.

Our beloved Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him)

said:
“No salah is accepted without wudu (purification)”
Sahih Muslim, Book 2, Hadith 2

Step 1 – Make your intention to perform wudu

The first step is to understand that you are about to begin
the process of wudu so that you can perform Salah.
Remember kids you should be silent that there are no
words or special statements that need to be said here.
Only creating the intention is a matter of the heart and
mind.

Step 2 – Say Bismillah

This is a critical part of making wudu. Before we begin to
our wash ourselves we need to say “Bismillah” (In the
Name of Allah). You can say it silently to yourself.

Step 3 – Wash Your Hands Three Times

Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon
him) taught us to begin with our right
side first. That means you will need to
wash your right hand from the
fingertips to the wrist three times.
Make sure water touches every part of
the hand. After wards perform the
same actions with your left hand three
times.

Step 4 – Rinse Your Mouth Three

Times

Take some water into your right hand

and rinse your mouth three times. Do
this thoroughly to clean your mouth properly in three
times.

Step 5 – Sniff Water into Your

Nostrils Three Times
Take some water in your right hand and
sniff it into your nose.

We used the word “sniff” here to give

you an idea of what this means. You will
need to snort or inhale the water into
your nose and then blow it out, three
times. Try not to take in too much water
or you may hurt yourself.

Step 6 – Wash Your

Face Three Times

Every part of the face needs to be

washed. That means from ear to
ear and from the top of your
forehead to the bottom of your chin.
Do this step three times.
For men who have beards take your wet hands and pass
them through your beard as you
wash your face.

Step 7 – Wash Your

Arms Three Times
Start from the fingertips and wash your
right arm up to the elbow three times.
Make sure that no part is left dry.
Afterwards, follow the same process for
your left arm and do it three times.

Step 8 – Wipe Your Head Once

Did you notice that step 8 says to “wipe”

your head instead of “wash”? The
choice of words here was intentional.
Move your wet hands from the top of the
forehead to the back of the head, and
then from the back of the head to the
forehead. This is done only once.
Step 9 – Clean Your Ears Once

This step should be performed with

the same water from step 8. Using
your wet hands, you will use your
index fingers to clean the inside of
your ears and your thumb to clean
the area behind your ears.
This is done only once.

Step 10 – Wash Your Feet Three Times

Similar to what was done with our

hands, we will also wash our feet three
times. Begin from your toes on your
right foot and wash up to and including
your ankle. Make sure water touches
every area of the right foot, especially
between the toes and the back of the
ankle. Do this three times with the right foot followed by
three times with the left foot.
Step 11 – Recite the Shahada and the Dua
When the Prophet (peace be upon him) would complete
his wudu he would say the shahadah:

“Ash-hadu an la ilaha illal lahu wa ash-hadu anna

Muhammadan ‘abduhu wa rasuluh.”
(I bear witness that none has the right to be worshipped but Allah alone, who has no partner; and I bear
witness that Muhammad is His slave and messenger.)

After this statement he would make the following dua:

“Allahuma j‘alnee mina tawabeen waj-‘alnee minal

mutatahireen”
(“O Allah, make me among those who seek repentance and make me among those who purify
themselves.”)

At this point your wudu is complete and you can begin to

pray.
Now that our wudu has been properly made we can
proceed and begin to pray salah. Here are the steps of the
salah:
 Standing
 Takbir
 Fatihah – Recitation
 Ruku – Bowing
 Sujud – Prostration
 Tashahud – Sitting

To understand the steps of the salah it is important to

understand that the prayer is made up of rakah, or units of
prayer. Every rakah has the same basic steps within it.
There will be a part when you are standing
 A part when you recite from the Quran
 A part when you bow down
 A part where you prostrate (make sujud)
Depending on which prayer you are performing there will
be slight differences in how these rakah are performed.
Here is a summary of how each of the five daily prayers
differ from one another:
 Fajr – has two rakah, or two units
 Dhur – has four rakah
 Asr – has four rakah
 Maghrib – has three rakah
 Isha – has four rakah
Now kids let us break down how each rakah of the salah
is performed, step by step.
STEPS IN PERFORMING SALAH: ONE RAKAH
AT A TIME
Step 1- NIYAH (Making your intention to pray)
After performing Wuduh, face
towards the Qibla and stand straight so
that there is a gap of at least four fingers
between your feet. First began the prayer
by making an intention from the heart to
pray to Allah. As soon as you begin, your
entire focus should be on the prayer itself
and nothing else.
You do not say it out loud, but you
should know the type and number of
rak’ats of the prayer you are going to
offer.
An example would be to think like:
‘I have presented myself in front of Allah to offer 2 rak’at
Fard Prayer, for Allah facing towards Kaaba’
Step 2- Takbeer Tahrimah
Raise your hands palms facing
towards Kaaba, up till your thumbs
stretched to ear lobes from behind and
leave the rest of the fingers in their normal
state, don’t join them together or spread
them apart and say “Allahu Akbar”.
(‘Allah is the greatest’
Step 3- QIYAM

Lower your hands and place them over

your naval. Your right hand should be
placed over your left hand.
Then recite “thana”:

“Subhaana Kal- lahumma wa bi-hamdika wa

tabaarakasmuka wa ta’ala judduka walaa ilaaha Ghaie-
ruk”
(‘all glogy is due to you, O” ALLAH! And all praise is due to you, and YOUR name is the most blessed,
and YOUR majesty is highly exalted and there is none worthy of worship except YOU’)

Then recite the tawwuz:

“a’auodu billahi minash-shaytaanir rajeem”

(‘I seek ALLAH’s protection from Satan who is accused’)

Then recite the tasmiyah:

“bis-millaahir rahmanir raheem”
(‘in the name of allah, the most kind and the most mercuful’)
Then recite the surah Fatihah:

Al ḥamdu lillāhi rabbi l-’ālamīn

Ar raḥmāni r-raḥīm
Māliki yawmi d-dīn
Iyyāka na’budu wa iyyāka nasta’īn
Ihdinā ṣ-ṣirāṭ al-mustaqīm
Ṣirāṭ al-l jīna an’amta ‘alayhim, ġayril maġḍūbi ‘alayhim
walāḍ ḍāllīn
(In the name of God, the infinitely Compassionate and Merciful. Praise be to God, Lord of all the worlds.
The Compassionate, the Merciful. Ruler on the Day of Reckoning. You alone do we worship, and You
alone do we ask for help. Guide us on the straight path, the path of those who have received your grace;
not the path of those who have brought down wrath, nor of those who wander astray .Amen.)

Note: after reciting the surah fatiha the people behind the imam softly say Ameen’.
Then recite the surah Ikhlas:

“Qul huwal laahu ahad

Allah hus-samad
Lam yalid wa lam yulad
Wa lam yakul-lahu kufuwan ahad”
(He is Allah, the One and Only; Allah, the Eternal, Absolute; He begetteth not, nor is He begotten;

And there is none like unto Him.’)

Note: if one is offering the prayer alone, Surah Ikhlas or any other surah should be
recited.

Step 4- RAFA YADAIN (raising both

hands)
Raised your hands’ palms facing towards
Kaaba, up till your thumbs stretched to
earlobes from behind and leave the rest of
the fingers in their normal state, don’t join
them together or spread them apart.
Say “Allahu Akbar” (Allah is the greatest)
while bending down for ruku.

Step 5- RUKU
In ruku position, grasp the
knees with the hands and spread
your fingers over the knees. Bend
your body so that your back is
straight and it should be in a 90-
degree angle with your legs, and
keep your sight at the ground.
Then say three (3) times;

“Subhanna Rabbiyal Azeem”

(‘Glorified is my Lord, the most great’)

Step 6- QAUMA- (standing after ruku)

Rise up from ruku, raise your hands
( palm facing towards Kaaba, up till your
thumb stretched to ear lobes from behind
and leave the rest of the fingers in their
normal state, don’t join them together or
spread them apart) then recite the:

“Samey – Allahu - Leman – Hameda”

(Allah listens to him who praises HIM.)

And then lower your hands hanging at your sides. While

standing say:

“Rabbana Lakal Hamd”

(‘Oh our SUSTAINER! All praise is due to You.)
Step 7- SUJUD

Perform the sujud while saying “Allahu

Akbar” (Allah is the greatest)
And also make sure forehead, nose, palms of both hands,
knees and both toes ane touching the ground.
Say this phrase while in sujud three (3) times;

“Subhanna rabbeeyal ‘alaa”

(‘Glorified is my Lord, the most high’.)

Step 8- JALSA (sitting between two sujud)

Say “Allahu akbar” (‘Allah is the greatest’) as you rise
from sujud and then sit on your left leg. Your left foot will
rest on the floor while your right foot is upright. Place your
hands on your knees.
When you are in this position it is recommended to ask
Allah for forgiveness. A simple and easy dua you can say
is:

“Allahuma ‘ghfirlee Warham’nee Wahdee’nee Wa’afinee

Warzuqn’nee Wajbur’nee Warfaa’nee”
(‘Oh Allah forgive me. Have mercy on me, grant me wellbeing, guide me, grant me subsistence, repair my
losses, and grant me high position.’)

Step 9- SECOND SUJUD

Repeat step 7 and don’t forget to say this phrase three (3)
times;
“Subhanna rabbeeyal ‘alaa”
(‘Glorified is my Lord, the most high’.)

Steps 10- ARISE FROM THE SUJUD

TO RETURN TO THE STANDING
POSITION AND SAY “Allahu
Akbar” (‘Allah is the greatest’.)
Congratulations, you have just completed
one full rakah! The first rakah of every
prayer is performed with these nine (10)
steps.
When you reach the end of the second
rakah you will perform the tashahud.

Step 11- PERFORM THE TASHAHUD AT THE END OF

EVERY TWO RAKAH.

Instead of standing up
after the two sujud, this
time around you will sit on
your legs and knees again.
You will raise your right
index finger and say:
“At Tahiyyaatu lilaahi was Salawaatu wat tayibaatu
Assalaamu ‘alaika ayyuhan nabiyyu wa rahmatul laahi wa
barakaatuh
Assalaamu ‘alaynaa wa ‘alaa ‘ebaadillaahis saaliheen,
Ash hadu allaa ilaah ilallaah Wa ash hadu anna
Muhammadan ‘abduhuu wa rasuuluh”
(‘Oh ALLAH! YOU alone deserve all Veneration, Worship, and Glory. Oh Propheth! Peace be on you and
the Mercy of ALLAH and HIS Blessings. Peace be upon us and on righteous servants of ALLAH. I bear
that none is worthy of worship except ALLAH and I bear witness that Muhammad is his servant and
Messenger.’)

If this is the final rakah in the prayer then you will add
this part to the tashahud:

“Allaahumma salli ‘ala Muhammadin wa ‘ala aali

Muhammadin
Kamaa salayta ‘ala aali Ibraaheema wa ‘ala aali Ibrahim
Innaka Hameedun Majeed
Allahumma baarik ‘ala Muhammadin wa ‘ala aali
Muhammad
Kamaa baarakta ‘ala aali Ibraaheemaa wa ‘ala aali
Ibrahim
Innaka Hameedun Majeed”
(‘Oh ALLAH, let your peace come upon Muhammad and the family of Muhammad, as You have brought
Peace to Ibrahim and his family. Truly, You are Praiseworthy and Glorious.’

‘Oh ALLAH, let your peace come upon Muhammad and the family of Muhammad, as You have brought
Peace to Ibrahim and his family. Truly, You are Praiseworthy and Glorious.’)

After the DUROOD, recite this Dua.

Rabbi Jaalni Muqeemasalata Wa Min Zurriyyati Rbbana

Watakabbal Dua Rabbanaghfirli Wali Wali Daiyya Wa Lil
Moominina Youma Yaqoomul Hisab
(‘Oh Lord, Make make me and my children steadfast in salah, our Lord accept the prayer. Our Lord,
forgive me and my parents and the believers on the day of judgement.’)

Step 12- TASLEEM / SALAM

After reciting the second part of the
tashahud, you will say the “tasleem.”
The tasleem is to look to your right and say:

“Assalamu alaykum wa rahmatu Allah”

(‘Peace be upon you and the mercy of ALLAH.’)

And then to look to the left and say it again:

“Assalamu alaykum wa rahmatu Allah”

(‘Peace be upon you and the mercy of ALLAH.’)

NOTE: When opening the prayer, it is very important to make sure that in the first rak’at
a big (size) Surah is recited and in the second rak’at a smaller Surah is recited, and so
on. And the order in which the Surahs occurred in the Holy Qur-an, should be taken
care and keep consistent with their sequence.

Prayer - Dua’s after Salah

Based on Qur'an and Sunnah, to be recited after every Fard Salah.

Immediately thereafter, the worshipper may recite the following supplication:

Tabarakta-ya-dhal’Jalali wa’l-Ikram."
(This means: O' Allah, You are the Peace, and You are the Source of Peace, You are Blessed, Oh
Possessor of Glory and Honor")

"Ala rasulina salawat."

(Allahumma salli ‘ala sayyidina Muhammadin wa ‘ala ali

sayyidina Muhammad.) said to oneself, silently.
At the end, additionally, one says in Arabic

"Subhanallahi, wal-hamdu-lillahi wa la-ilahaill’Allahu-wa’l-

lahu-akbar, Wa la hawla wa la quwwata illa billah-il-aliy’yil-
adhim."
("Glory be to Allah, and praise be to Allah, and there is no god but Allah, and Allah is the Most High. It is
only by the assistance, help and power of Allah the Most Great that we give up rebelling and turn to
obeying Allah the Lord.)

After this, the audhu-bismillah is said together with Ayat al

Kursi (The Throne Verse). Then these tasbeeh duas are
said (Always recite the following du’as silently):
