Chapel Car Messenger of Peace (Photo courtesy of Northwest Railway Museum)

Not much of our region’s rail history is still active, but the Northwest
Railway Museum in Snoqualmie (art of the museum’s home, the Snoqualmie
Depot on page 9) is preserving parts of it for future generations—including
the “Chapel Car Messenger of Peace,” seen above in 1922.
Please join us on Saturday, April 9 when Jessie Clark McAbee talks about
the ongoing work to restore the Chapel Car and other
museum efforts. Used for spreading the gospel April
in remote areas, the Chapel Car was built in General Meeting

The RHS
Scanning
Crew

The Sammamish Valley News scanning project has four teams working
through some 20,000 negatives, most donated by SVN staffers Chuck Lee
and Larry Stair. “We are grateful for these and hope to come up with some
jewels for our centennial celebration in 2012,” says John Phillips, chair of the
Collection Management Committee. “It’s like looking through someone’s
photo album . . . really fun.”
Our merry band of scanners is seen here with Chris Himes, second from
right, top; and Bob Bailie, Jr., second from left, bottom. The scanners from
top left: Jerry Hammersberg, Joyce Fowler, John Phillips, Jutta Rhinehart,
Sylvia Bernauer, Margy Rockenbeck, Jean Etta Goshorn and Tom Hall. From
bottom left: Jackie Nelson, Vivian Robinson and John Couch.
If you are interested in helping out, please call Monica Park at the RHS
Office at 425.885.2919 or email info@redmondhistoricalsociety.org.

Ralph Rosford in 1986 built this

model of the “Scenic Redmond” bus
that took tourists around in the early
1900s. It’s carrying a photo of the
real truck. Thanks to Andy Weiss for
loaning it, and feel free to stop by
the office to check it out.

In Memoriam: Lois Phillips Hudson

Noted author/historian Lois Phillips Hudson, a guest speaker back in
2003 (see redmondhistoricalsociety.org/RHS/images/PDF/pdf2003/rhs_
newsletter_04_2003.pdf), passed away on December 24. Larry Kellogg, a
cousin, alerted us to her death and notes efforts are being made to publish
several novels she had worked on in recent years. “As Lois’ little cousin, she
gave me signed copies of ‘Bones of Plenty’ and ‘Reapers of the Dust,” Larry
told us. “My last memories of North Dakota were when I left at age five. I
can do without snow over the roof of the house.”

the SVN days.

Bob joked about the paper always being late to press because his
dad was the last to submit his editorial. “My dad was somewhat of a
procrastinator at times, but it was more that he always wanted to express
his thoughts carefully and thoughtfully,” he said. “If he didn’t he would hear
about it the next day at the Lion’s Club meeting.”
Bob, Sr. was recruited to Redmond in the mid 1940s to start the SVN
and was a major influence in shaping local politics and community growth,
local sports, school bonds, service clubs and business progress. “Bob was
a visionary and always had Redmond’s best interest in his heart,” said
Couch, City Parks and Recreation director from 1968-2000.
RHS President Chris Himes remembers Bob writing about
contentious times after she defeated longtime Mayor Selwyn L. Bud
Young. Couch recalled that “Bailie had supported the ‘old guard’ and told
it like it was, and newcomer Chris was for ‘change’ and she told it like
it was.”
The two sides seemed to understand that improving Redmond was a
goal shared by each. It was an interesting four years of “togetherness” to
say the least, said Couch.
