A Powerful Earthquake of Magnitude 7
It caused extensive loss of life and property. Over 20,000 persons are reported dead and about 1.7
lakhs injured.
The quake generated intense shaking which was felt in 70% region of India. The tremors even felt in
the neighboring Pakistan and Nepal.
The damaged areas are spread over 300km far from the epicenter.
The effect was particularly severe in the Kutch district. Its four major urban areas –Bhuj, Anjar,
Bachau and Rapar suffered near total destruction.
The rural areas in the region are also very badly affected with over 229 villages almost totally
destroyed.
Looking at Gujarat’s past, this area has a history of destruction caused by earthquakes.
Before the 2001 Gujarat earthquake, there were two previous earthquakes in the Gujarat, India. The
most recent earthquake occured on July 21, 1956 in Anjar, measuring 7.7 Mw on the Richter scale.
The other earthquake that occurred in Gujarat, was the Rann of Kutch on June 16, 1819 that
measured 7.7-8.2 Mw.
