Heat Pipes
Humidity concerns have merged with health concerns for quite some time now. High
humidity is known to promote growth of mold and mildew, presence of which can have
serious consequences for health of the occupants. Similarly in many industrial projects,
humidity control can be of great significance due to process conditions required and also
to prevent spoilage of products due to humidity.
Heat pipes have been proven to be of excellent value in reducing RH without
increasing the operating costs. The way the system works is unique. Addition of Heat
Pipes in the systems increases the moisture removal capacity of the evaporator coils and
also puts back the required re-heat for humidity control. Heat pipes provide all these
benefits without addition of a single cent on energy costs.

Operating Principal
Originally invented by NASA scientists for space applications, a heat-pipe is a simple
device that can transfer heat from one point to another without having to use an Working Fluid
(Vapor)

external power supply.

A typical Heat Pipe and is partially filled with a working fluid and has two sections, an
evaporator and a condenser. Evaporator is in contact with the source of heat and uses Re-Heated Air Cold Air

the available heat as latent heat of evaporation to convert working fluid to vapor, which
tends to fill the entire internal space of the heat pipe. The condenser is in contact with
heat sink which provides cooling to the heat pipe (Heat pipe rejects heat to heat sink).
The loss of heat in condenser leads to the vapor losing the heat of condensation and
converting back to liquid. The condensed liquid returns to the evaporator section via
the in-built in capillary structure inside the heat pipe to complete the cycle.
Heat pipes have a huge heat flux capacity and the speed of heat transfer within a heat Warm Air Pre-Cooled Air

pipe is comparable to sonic speeds (speed of sound). A Heat Pipe can have heat

transfer capacity up to 1000 times more than a copper rod of similar size and dimen- (Liquid)

sions. No wonder heat pipes are often referred to being super conductors.

Cooling Coil
(Pre Cooling Section) (Reheat Section)
InviroTech Heat pipes are made with “U” Shaped finned tubes, which form
a ‘wrap’ around the cooling coil in the AHU, such that the evaporator
section of the Heat pipe is upstream of the cooling coil and condenser
section of the heat pipe is downstream of cooling coil.

U-Type (Wrap Around)

Heat Pipe

With a simple installation inside the AHU, the heat of the air coming
into the coil is transferred to the air leaving the coil, thus producing
free reheating. On the other hand, the loss of heat from the incoming
air results in cooler on-coil condition, therefore reducing the size air
conditioning equipment required to produce the same off coil
temperature.
