AN AMERICAN NATIONAL STANDARD Buttwelding Ends Nee ASME/ANS! B16.25-1986 IROVISION OF ANSI B16.25-1970) | SPONSORED AND PUBLISHED BY THE AMERICAN SOCIETY OF MECHANICAL ENGINEERS United Engineering Center 345 Eost 47th Street New York, N.¥. 10017 FOR INFORMATION ONLY Naw AN AMERICAN NATIONAL STANDARD Buttwelding Ends SPONSORED AND PUBLISHED BY THE AMERICAN SOCIETY OF MECHANICAL ENGINEERS United Engineering Center 345 East A7th Street New York, N.¥. 10017 FOR INFORMATION ONLY FOREWORD (vis Foreword # not part of ASME/ANSI 916.25-7986) Jn July 1953, the American Welding Society presented a proposal on Welding End Prepa- Jation to Sectional Committee B16 of the American Standards Association (ASI), with the recommendation that it be considered as a candidate American Standard. The proposal was expanded to include welding preparation for flanges and valves covered by ASA B16.5, Steel Pipe Flanges and Flanged Fittings, and for fittings covered by ASA B16.9, Bucoweld- ing Fittings. Consideration was also given to Pipe Fabrication Institute Standard ES-1 ‘The third draft reviewed by Subcommittee 3, Subgraup 6 (now Subcommittee F) of the B16 Sectional Committee was forwarded to the Commitee, (0 the cosponsor organiza- tions, and then to ASA for approval. Final approval was given on September 14, 1953, with the Gesignation ASA B16.25-1955, Revisions were developed as need for clarification and improvement became known, and. were approved as ASA B16.25-1958 and ASA BI6.25-1964. After ASA rec asthe American National Standards Institute (ANSI) and the Sectional Committee became American National Standards Committee B16, a further revision was approved as ANS] B16.25-1972. i Subcommittee F kmmediately began work on a major expansion and updating of the standard, adding illustrations and sequirements for welding end configurations applicable to a number of specific circumstances, including cast steel and slioy valves. When a draft had been developed that overcame the many problems and conflicting demands, the Stan- dards Commitice, cosecretariat organizations, and ANSI concurred in approval of ANSI 1B16.25-1979 on July 18, 1979. In 1982, American National Standards Committee B16 was reorganized as an ASME, Committee operating under procedures accredited by ANSI. In this 1980 edition, inch di mensions are established as the standard and numerous changes im text and made, Notes for illustrations are also clarified. Following approval by the Stam mittee and ASME, approval as American National Standard was given by ANSI on Octo- ber 8, 1986, with the new designation ASME/ANSI BI6.25-1986. ‘Requests for imerpretation or suggestions for revision should be sent to the ary, B16 Committee, The American Society of Mechanical Engineers, United Engineering Cen- ter, 345 East 47th Street, New York, NY 10017, of Tonsonce: June 18, 1987 ‘The 1986 edition of this Standard is being issued with an automatic addenda subscription service. The use of an addenda allows revisions made in response to public review comments or.committee actions 10 be published as necessary: revisions published in addenda will become effective 6 months after the Date of lesvance of the addenca, The next edition of this Standard is scheduled for publication in 1297. z ASME iesues written replies te Inquiries concerning interpretations of technical aapects of this Standard, The interpretations will be included with the above addenda service. Application This Standard applies to any metallic materials for which a welding procedure can be satisfactorily quali- fied, but does not prescribe specific welding processes or procedures. Uniess otherwise specified by the pur- chaser, it does not apply to welding ends conforming to ASME/ANSI BIG.5, BIG.9, or B16.2 1.3 Standard Units ‘The inch is the standard unit for linear dimensions."
