REPORT ACCOMPANYING THE DESIGN REPORT FOR RE CONSTRUCTION OF

SYPHON( VAGU ) @Km. 0.400 ON RIGHT MAIN CANAL

UNDER THOPUGUNTA DISTRIBUTARY SYSTEM

Introduction : The hydraulic Particulars of Thopugunta Distribuatry system have

been approved by the Superintending Engineer, SSLC & SB Circle, Nellore. In the approved
Hydraulic Particulars Provision was made for construction of Syphon @ Km. 0.400
under Thopugunta Distributary system.

The canal bed level and vagu bed level at the point of crossing are + 84.267

and + 84.200 repectively.

The catchment area of the stream is 0.100 sq.km. The max.flood discharge

calculated from Dicken's formula , Q = CM 3/4 with a value of 'c' as 19.50, works out to

3.468 cumecs.

DESIGN OF WELL SYPHON(CANAL) @ Km. 0.400 ON RIGHT MAIN CANAL
UNDER THOPUGUNTA DISTRIBUTARY SYSTEM
1.1 Intruduction
In some situations the canal bed level and stream bed level are almost at same level
or the stream bed level may above or below CBL.The stream is a feeder to some
tank.Depression of stream bed may effects the tank.In such situations a canal
syphon is proposed.The canal water is let down into an u/s well through an opening
installed in the side wall of the well.The u/s side well will also act as an energy dissipator.

1.4 Fixing of size of barrel:-
Provid 1 row of NP3 class R.C.C Hume pipes with a diameter of 1.20 m
Thickness of pipe = 0.120 m

V Loss of head calculation :
Assuming the flow through pipes is full, loss of head is calculated using Unwins formula

h = ( 1 + f1 + f2 L / R ) V / 2g
2

h = Driving head (m)

L = Length of barrel (m) = 15.0 m
R = Hydraulic mean radius in (m) (n * D/4)
= 1.00 x 1.20 /4 = 0.300 m
V = Velocity through barrel in (m/sec)
f1 = Co-efficent of loss of head at entry = 0.505
f2 = Friction co-efficent = a(1+0.3 * b/R)
a = 0.00316
b= 0.10

f2 = 0.00316 1 + 0.030 / 0.300 = 0.0030

2

h= 1 + 0.505 + 0.003 x 15.00 0.764

0.30 19.62

= 0.049 m

There fore provide bed level of canal on D/S side of D/S side well as
84.267 - 0.049 = 84.218
However provided + 84.167

Calculation of thickness of side wall of well:-

Assume thickness of wall = 0.30 m
Outar Radius = 1.50 + 0.30 / 2 = 0.90 m

The earth pressure on the well steining at the bottom

= wh 2 1 - sin Ф
2 1 + sin Ф

2
= 2100 x 2.250 1-sin 30
2 1+sin 30

= 5315.63 x 0.333
= 1770 kg/sqm
Check:-
1) Outside radial pressure is 1770 kg/sqm and outar radius is 0.90 m

1770 = a + b where a and b are constants

R2

1770 = a + b 1
0.81

2) There is no water thrust from in side of the well

Inner radius 1.50 / 2 = 0.75 m
Inner radial pressure is 0 kg/sqm and inner radius is 0.75 m

0 = a + b where a and b are constants

R2

0 = a + b 2
0.563
Solving equations (1) and (2) we get

1770 = b - b
1 0.563

1770 = b x 0.563 - 1
0.563

1770 = b x -0.438
0.563

995.68 = b x -0.438

b = -2276

a = -b
0.563
a = 2276 = 4046
0.563

The hoop compression in the steining is given by

f= a - b
R2
The hoop compression in the inner periphery of the well

f= 4046 + 2276 = 8092 Kg/sqm

0.563

The hoop compression in the outar periphery of the well

f= 4046 + 2276 = 6856 Kg/sqm

0.81

This shows that no tension is developing in the steining and the maximum compressive stress
is within the permissible limits for concrete M 15 grade .Hence the section assumed is safe
84.167
nd b are constants
nd b are constants
