End Task
Task 34-13-02-740
4. Flight Calibration
A. Test Parameters.
(1) Do the Safe Flight Angle-of-Attack System Check.
(2) Do the flight tests in smooth air, at less than 10,000 feet mean sea level (MSL).
(3) The airplane ramp weight without fuel, must be known within 50 pounds.
(a) The center-of-gravity (Cg) must be within 1 percent of forward center-of-gravity limit for
weight tested during each check.
NOTE: If the airplane is not flown at correct Cg, airspeed and AOA indications will not
match the chart.
(4) Remove the carpet and the access panel 271ATC to get access to the AOA computer. Refer
to Chapter 6, Access Plates and Panels Identification - Description and Operation.
(5) Three tests are required: cruise configuration (flaps at 0 degrees and gear retracted), approach
configuration (flaps at 15 degrees and gear retracted) and landing (flaps at 40 degrees and
gear extended) configuration.
(6) The airplane must be stabilized (autopilot ON - ALT HOLD) in level flight with the instrument
panel mounted analog angle-of-attack indicator at 0.6, +0.02 or -0.02, for several seconds at
a constant airspeed before reading the airspeed indicator.
WARNING: Do not allow airspeed to fall below 0.7 units on the
angle-of-attack indicator. Slowing the aircraft below 0.7 with
a potentially mis-calibrated AOA system could result in the
aircraft stalling, with little or no warning.
(7) For each test configuration, after the airplane is stabilized in level flight, tap the face of the AOA
indicator and airspeed indicator to overcome friction before taking the instrument reading.
B. Do the In-Flight Adjustments.
WARNING: Improper adjustment of summing unit normalizing switches can
cause premature or late onset of stall warning.
(1) Put the airplane in the landing configuration (flaps at 40 degrees and gear extended).
(2) The airplane must be stabilized (autopilot ON - ALT HOLD) in level flight with the instrument
panel mounted analog angle-of-attack indicator at 0.6, +0.02 or -0.02, for several seconds at
a constant airspeed before reading the airspeed indicator.
(a) Record the airspeed and compare to the curve illustrated in Figure 502 Chart value with
airplane IAS.
1 If the difference is more than +2.0 or -2.0 KIAS adjust the AOA computer
normalization switches. Refer to Table 501
(3) Adjust the AOA computer normalization switches as follows:
(a) If the indicated airspeed at 0.6 angle-of-attack is lower than indicated in Table 501, reset
the angle-of-attack computer normalization switches to increase the millivolt value as
shown in Table 501.
NOTE: Increasing the normalization switch setting by 150 mVDC in accordance with
Table 501 will increase the indicated airspeed by approximately 1 knot.
(b) After the angle-of-attack computer adjustment, let the airplane stabilize in level flight with
the angle-of-attack indicator at 0.6, +0.02 or -0.02, for several seconds at a constant
airspeed before reading the airspeed indicator.
(c) Make sure that the IAS is within +2.0 or -2.0 knots of the values shown in Figure 502.
(d) The top of the Low Speed Awareness (LSA) white tape represents 1.3VS. The speed
corresponding to the top of the white segment of the LSA must agree within +2.0 or -2.0
knots of speeds in Figure 502.
(4) Check the approach configuration (flaps 15 degrees and gear retracted).
(a) Let the airplane become stable in level flight (autopilot ON-ALT HOLD) with instrument
panel mounted analog angle-of-attack indicator at 0.6, +0.02 or -0.02, for several
seconds at a constant air speed before reading the airspeed indicator.
(b) Record the airplane indicated airspeed and compare the value to the chart in Figure 502
for the current gross weight and configuration.
1 The tolerance for approach configuration is +2.0 or -2.0 KIAS from curves shown
in Figure 502.
(5) Check the cruise configuration (flaps 0 degrees and gear retracted).
1 The tolerance for cruise configuration is +4.0 or -4.0 KIAS from curve shown in
Figure 502.
(6) If accuracy requirements in landing configuration, approach configuration and cruise
configuration are not obtained, do the normalization switch procedure again with the airplane
in the landing configuration. Do the airspeed measurements for all three configurations again,
and make sure that the values are in tolerance.
WARNING: Improper adjustment of the summing unit normalizing switches
can cause early or late onset of stall warning.
(7) After you get satisfactory flight test results, write the AOA computer normalizing switch settings
on the AOA calibration switch placard, Safe Flight P/N 56501-16 with an "X" to represent the
switch segments that are in the ON position in the correct box and put the placard on the shelf
next to the AOA computer where it is clearly visible.
(8) Reinstall access panel 271ATC . Refer to Chapter 6, Access Plates and Panels Identification
- Description and Operation.
