(Smith, 2009, p. 103).

During a conversation with his young brother, Ezequiel tells him that one of the reasons
why he loves Sacha so much is her eyes: “The only eyes that look at me, the only eyes in
which I can see my true self (...) are in my dog's eyes. In Sacha´s eyes” (Santa Ana,
1998, p. 52-53, my translation).

According to Smith (2009), “The point is not that the state is in retreat but that it is
developing new forms of power” (p. 103).

Briony frames the current event under her recent and fictional revelation that Robbie is
actually “the incarnation of evil” (McEwan, 2007, p. 115).
