Introductory Message

Welcome to Science 7

The Learning Activity Sheet is a product of the collaborative efforts of the

Schools Division of Cadiz City and DepEd Regional Office VI - Western Visayas
through the Curriculum and Learning Management Division (CLMD). This is
developed to guide the learning facilitators (teachers, parents and responsible adults)
in helping the learners meet the standards set by the K to 12 Basic Education
Curriculum.

The Learning Activity Sheet is self-directed instructional materials aimed to

guide the learners in accomplishing activities at their own pace and time using the
contextualized resources in the community. This will also assist the learners in
acquiring the lifelong learning skills, knowledge and attitudes for productivity and
employment.

For learning facilitator:

The Science 7 Learning Activity Sheet (LAS) will help you facilitate the
leaching-learning activities specified in each Most Essential Learning Competency
(MELC) with minimal or no face-to-face encounter between you and learner. This will
be made available to the learners with the references/links to ease the independent
learning.

For the learner:

The Science 7 Learning Activity Sheet (LAS) is developed to help you

continue learning even if you are not in school. This learning material provides you
with meaningful and engaging activities for independent learning. Being an active
learner, carefully read and understand the instructions then perform the activities and
answer the assessments. This will be returned to your facilitator on the agreed
schedule.

SCIENCE 7 ACTIVITY SHEET WEEK 5

Sexual and Asexual Reproduction

I. Learning Competency with Code

Differentiate asexual from sexual reproduction in terms of:

1. Number of individuals involved.
2. Similarities of offspring to parents. (S7LT-IIg-7)

II. Background Information for Learners

All forms of life starting from the simplest to the most complex possess not only
the ability to survive but also the instinct to reproduce. Reproduction is the biological
procedure by which new “offspring” are produced from their “parents.” It is an important
feature of all known life that each individual organism occurs as the product of
reproduction. Most importantly, reproduction is needed for the existence of a species.
The identified methods of reproduction are generally grouped into two main types:
sexual and asexual.

This learning activity sheet will help you understand more on the difference
between the sexual and asexual reproduction as well as the number of individuals
involved and the similarities of offspring to parents.

IV. Activity Proper

Activity 1:

Directions: Read and understand the information given. Complete the table below
by filling out the data given and answer the following guide questions. Write your
answers on your answer sheet.

Types of Reproduction:

1. Asexual Reproduction
• Occurs when only one parent produces an offspring which has the
exact genetic make-up with the parent. This type of reproduction
• Mostly occurs in single - celled organisms such as bacteria; some
multicellular organisms such as fungi; and some plants.

1
The different types of asexual reproduction are:

1. Vegetative reproduction
• Form of asexual reproduction in plants that occurs when a new plant
develops from a fragment of the parent plant or a specialized
reproductive structure (rhizome, tuber, corm, or bulb)
• Example: Cactus plants which can reproduce through its leaves

2. Binary fission
• The cell divides to form two identical daughter cells.
• Each daughter cell grows until it becomes as large as the parent cell.
• Example: Amoeba cell reproduces by dividing.

3. Budding
• New identical individual forms as an outgrowth of the parent.
• The outgrowth detaches from the parent and becomes a new individual.
• Example: yeast, hydra, and sponges

4. Spore Formation
• Spores are stored in sacs called Sporangia.
• When the Sporangia bursts open; minute single-celled structures
called spores are released.
• Under favorable conditions, these spores develop into a new identical
organism.
• Example: Bread mold

5. Regeneration
• Severed parts of the organisms grow into another organism similar to
it.
• Example: when a hydra is cut into several pieces, a process known as
fragmentation, each piece can grow into another hydra and in certain
types of starfish, an arm that breaks off from the body can grow into a
new individual.

2. Sexual Reproduction
• Involves the merging of genetic information from two individual
parents to produce a new organism that is a combination of both
parents.
• It occurs in most complex organisms.

The following are the different ways on how representative microorganisms,

plants, and animals reproduce sexually:
1. Conjugation
• This type of sexual reproduction occurs when two organisms of the
same species temporarily unite to merge one organism’s contents,
along with its genetic material, with the other.
• One organism is left with an empty shell while the other becomes a
new individual.
• Example: Spirogyra (green alga)

2
2. Pollination
• Combines the male and female gametes of a flower and it happens
when a pollen grain of the right kind lands on the stigma of the pistil.
• Example: bees transfer pollen of a male flower to the female flower.

3. Fertilization –
• A type of sexual reproduction that combines the male and female
gametes of an organism to form a zygote.
• Example: Humans reproduce through fertilization.

Key Answers to Guide Questions:
1. Item numbers 1, 4, and 5.
2. Item numbers 2 and 3.
3. Sexual involves 2 parents to reproduce an offspring while asexual reproduction only
involves 1 parent producing an offspring.
4. In sexual reproduction, the offspring produced have an identical genetic information with
the parent. While in asexual reproduction, the offspring produced is a completely new
individual that has a genetic information which is a combination of both parents.
Key Answers to Activity 2
ASEXUAL
• 1 parent
• Genetic information of offspring is similar with the parent
SEXUAL
• 2 parents
• Genetic information of offspring is half of both parents. Offspring emerges as different
from parents
Key answer to Guide Question:
1. Sexual reproduction involves two individuals to produce an offspring that is genetically
different from the parents. Whereas asexual reproduction involves only one parent that
produces an offspring with a genetic information that is similar to the parent.
