Dear students: - Copy the note and do the given homework on your exercise book!
Subject: _Mathematics Grade & section 9(A –F)
Unit: 5
Main topic: Measurement and Geometry
Sub topic/s: Further on congruency
Page range from: 190 to 194
……..Continued note
SSS(side side side) congruency theorem
Remark: where ∆ is used to mean “triangle”
Where ≡ is used to mean “congruent to”
Consider ∆ABC and ∆DEF
Prove that ∆ABC and ∆DEF are congruent
A D
B C E F
4cm 2cm
Proof 1. AB ≡ DE (given)
2. AC ≡ DE (given)
3. BC ≡ DF (given)
4. ∆ABC ≡ ∆EFD (SSS congruency theorem)
But ∆ABC is not congruent to ∆DEF because the corresponding sides
AB is not congruent to DE
BC is not congruent to EF
AC is not congruent to DF
If you try to overlap ∆ABC and ∆DEF one doesn’t coincide with the other.
B C E F
5cm
Where ˂A=˂F=500
Prove that ∆ABC and ∆DEF are congruent.
Proof: 1. AB ≡ DF (given)
2. AC ≡ FE (given)
3. ˂A=˂F (given)
4. ∆BAC ≡ ∆DFE (SAS congruency theorem)
But ∆ABC is not congruent to ∆EFD because the corresponding sides
AB is not congruent to EF
BC is not congruent to FD
AC is not congruent to ED
If you try to overlap ∆ABC and ∆EFD one doesn’t coincide with the other.
3. ASA (angle side angle)congruency theorem
Consider ∆ABC and ∆DEF
Prove that ∆ABC and ∆DEF are congruent
A D
3 cm 3cm
B C E F
Where ˂A=˂D=500
Where ˂B=˂E=400
Prove that ∆ABC and ∆DEF are congruent.
Proof: 1. AB ≡ DF (given)
2. ˂A=˂D (given)
3. ˂B=˂E (given)
4. ∆BAC ≡ ∆FDE (ASA congruency theorem
But ∆ABC is not congruent to ∆EFD because the corresponding sides
AB is not congruent to EF
BC is not congruent to FD
AC is not congruent to ED
If you try to overlap ∆ABC and ∆EFD one doesn’t coincide with the other.
5cm 5 cm
B C E F
4 cm 4cm
Where <B=<E= 900
Prove that ∆ABC and ∆DEF are congruent.
Proof: 1. BC ≡ EF (given)
2. AC ≡ DF (given)
3. ˂B=˂E (given)
4. ∆BAC ≡ ∆EDF (RHC congruency theorem)
But ∆ABC is not congruent to ∆EFD because the corresponding sides
AB is not congruent to EF
BC is not congruent to FD
AC is not congruent to ED
If you try to overlap ∆ABC and ∆EFD one doesn’t coincide with the other.
