CORRIGENDUM FOR UG SAMPLE QUESTIONS

THE NATIONAL LAW APTITUDE TEST 2020

There has been an inadvertent error in Question 1.1 of the Sample General Comprehension
Questions for the NLAT UG 2020. The corrected version of the question, answer options,
and rationale is set out below. We apologise for any inconvenience this may have caused.

1.1 Assuming that an equal number of refugees came to India each day in the period August
1, 1971 to 15 December 1971, what would be the per day cost (at the rate of 3 rupees per
person per day) of maintaining all the refugees that the government would have to incur
as of the end of day on November 13, 1971 in USD terms? (Assume the exchange rate for
Indian Rupees and US dollars was constant in the period mentioned).

(a) Less than US $ 1million

(b) Between US $ 2 million to 3 million
(c) Between US $ 3 million to 4 million
(d) More than US $ 5 million

(Answer: (c))

Rationale:

The correct answer is (c) – Between US $ 3 million to 4 million

Total number of refugees (in millions) from August 1 to December 15 = 2.67
Number of days between August 1 and December 15 = 31 + 30 + 31 + 30 + 15 = 137
Therefore, refugees (in millions) per day = 2.67 / 137 = .0195 = .02 approximately [3 /
140 is also .02 approximately]
Number of days between August 1 and November 13 = 31 + 30 + 31 + 13 = 105
Number of refugees in 105 days = 105 * .02 = 2.1 million
Number of refugees up to the end of July 1971 = 7.23 million
Therefore, total refugees on November 13 = 7.23 + 2.1 = 9.33 million
Cost to the government per refugee per day = Rs. 3
Therefore, as of the end of day on November 13, 1971 cost to the government per day =
3 * 9.33 = 27.99 = Rs. 28 million approximately
Converting to US $ = 576/4320 * 28 = 3.7 million USD
