SECTION 3

Each questions carry 5 marks.

1. Calculate total pressure difference across inlet & outlet of pipe.

Pipe diameter=4" (nominal) or 101.6 mm

Pipe diameter (Internal) = 102.3 mm

Total Pipe Length=30 m (Vertical Plane)

Fluid velocity= 2 m/s

Fluid Density=1000 kg/m3

Fluid Viscosity= 8.9 * 104 Pas

Use 2K or 3K method for fittings:

Use R/D = 2 for 90 degree elbow welded.

2. Estimate the steam and the cooling water required for the distillation column shown in the
figure

Steam is available at 25 psig (274 KN/M2 abs,dry saturated . the rise in cooling tower
temperature is limited to 30 degree c. column operates at 1bar pressure

3. 150000 lb per hour of kerosene will be heated from 75 to 120°F by cooling a gasoline stream
from 160 to 120°F. Inlet pressure will be 50 psia for each stream and the maximum pressure
drop of 7 psi for gasoline and 10 psi for kerosene are permissible. fouling factors is 0.0003.
