Limiting a research topic


- Writing a research paper makes the student reads and benefits a lot:
1- It makes him familiar with the conventions which are the techniques of writing,
reading, and collecting ideas. He can learn them only by practicing. And also be
familiar with the ethics which mean to be honest and tell the truth. Moreover, the
way the researcher deals with people should depend on his ethics.
2- It will teach him to be a good researcher because he will learn how to search for
relevant sources and ideas systematically and patiently. The more he writes research
paper, the easier and the faster he will write.
3- It helps him to achieve higher grades in the other courses.
4- In the beginning, he will find it difficult, but at the end he will be happy of the efforts
and the results after many hours of writing.
5- It trains him for future research.
6- While writing a research, he will be practicing several language skills: reading,
writing, thinking, revising, and taking and collecting ideas.
7- It helps him to be an independent researcher because he will no longer need the
help of others. It makes the reading with thinking as a habit to him
8- It is a learning and intellectual activity. It helps him how to type.
- The student could ask his professor and friends for ideas to choose a topic.
1- The topic should be interesting.
2- It must have enough sources. It is not enough to go to one place, the researcher
must look in many libraries as much as he can, and also use the Internet.
3- Generally, the research paper requires between 10 and 20 typed pages.
4- It should be specific
5- The Audience are the ones who read the research paper.
- There are two types of topics: literary, and educational topics.
- If the researcher likes literature, he must think of:
1- Literary figure (e.g., Shakespeare)
2- Literary genre (e.g., a novel, a tragedy, a comedy)
3- A literary work (e.g., Hamlet, king Lear)
4- A small topic in this work (e.g., a theme, a particular character, relationships)
- Educational topic:
- The researcher must specify the nationality and geographical area.
- E.g., what he likes in teaching, in grammar, in language.
- Then he should choose a small topic about one of them.
- E.g., 1- the use of articles by secondary school students in Gaza.
2- the benefits of audio lingual in teaching elementary school students in Gaza.
