16MEE56 Battery System for Electric Vehicles

Assignment 1

Let us consider a future scenario where the city/state/country mandates the use of zero-
emission vehicles for personal use from 2025. In the near future, owners of personal vehicles
have to shift from conventional internal combustion engine vehicles to buy a new electric
vehicles. They are looking at options currently available in the market to make a choice of
vehicle to buy. In this scenario, you as a knowledgeable person on electric vehicles notice that
there are several advantages to the electric vehicles like zero tail-pipe emissions, fast
acceleration and many challenges as well as long charging times and the high cost of the
battery. There are hence, many design trade-offs to make. In this assignment, you have to use
the knowledge gained in this course to design a battery pack for an electric vehicle and charging
system that people in the city/state/country can buy.
Take into consideration the local design parameters like the driving needs (km per day), driving
behavior (city roads or highways), auxiliary needs, charging facilities required, etc. come up
with a battery pack for an electric vehicle for your city that can meet the above needs. Ideally,
people want a vehicle that consumes little energy, drives very long on a single charge, can
charge itself quickly, can use electricity from sustainable sources of energy and of course, has a
low cost.
1. Design your own battery pack for an electric vehicle of your choice.

2. Develop your design step-by-step.

3. Write a short essay describing your design choices and motivation behind them.

The design report should include;

a. Selection of suitable Li-Ion battery cells and formats

b. Modeling of the cells, modules and pack

c. Modeling of the battery management system

d. Vehicle layout and mechanical assembly drawings of battery system

e. Cost benefit analysis of battery and its sub systems

Try to include the above points in a report of at least 1000 words. If you include external

sources, please use referencing and add a word count. Try to aim for a maximum of 1500

words.

 Include headings for different topics you are addressing

 Use standard practices of design like system architecture, QFD, Decision

Matrix, MBD, etc.

 Provide, where applicable, quantitative analysis

 Provide calculations of how these characteristics were obtained

 Use drawings, tables, sketches and figures to substantiate your design
