Document Development Exposition: Instructions and Usability Test Script

Explain in detail your document’s development from planning to finish, describing your
challenges, how you overcame them, and what you learned.

Planning
When planning my instructions, the biggest challenge I had to overcome was making it easy to
understand. I was afraid that it may come off as difficult and I thought that I may be blinded by
already knowing how to rock climb, and I wouldn’t use plain language. I also thought using a lot of
visuals would be helpful.

First Draft (for peer editing)

The peer editing brought to light the same struggles I mentioned above. I did not have anyone peer
edit mine in time before turning it in, however, when we discussed our topics, my group expressed
similar concerns. They stated that it may be difficult to really explain how to rock climb because it is
so hands on. They did mention using lots of visuals to be helpful, and that is what I did.

Second Draft (for your packet)

My second draft did not have any changes because I did not have a peer review on it. No one
responded to me in a timely manner, however, I would have made similar changes to what the
professor noted. I learned after reviewing other papers that the layout was very important and that
is what I focused on the least.

Final Draft (for your portfolio)

I learned the most at this point in the editing. The layout was my biggest concern. I improved my
instructions by adding boxes and color to the pages to allow for separation. Secondly, instead of
bullet points, I added numbers. This was recommended to me, and I also felt like it made it more
orderly, and easier to follow along. I felt as if bullet points could be easily skipped over. I removed a
few of the images and the text along with it. Instead of relying on the images to explain concepts, I
explained them myself. I feel like all of these things significantly improved the quality of my
document.
