GERUND
What is a Gerund? It’s a verb plus (+) ING
VERB + ING = GERUND
Trabajar Work ing working
Estudiar Study ing studying
Preparar make ing making

INFINITIVE
What is an infinitive? It’s a word TO plus (+) a verb.
TO + VERB = INFINITIVE
To work to work trabajar
To study to study estudiar
To make to make preparar

1. Estos verbos pueden ser seguidos por un Gerundio o por un Infinitivo


Like – hate – can’t stand - start – begin - continue - love
Example:

VERB Like = gustar


GERUND I like swimming (a mi me gusta nadar)
INFINITIVE I like to swim (a mi me gusta nadar)

VERB Hate = odiar


GERUND She hates swimming (ella odia nadar)
INFINITIVE She hates to swim (ella odia nadar)

VERB can’t stand = no soporto


GERUND We can’t stand listening to rock music.
INFINITIVE We can’t stand to listen to rock music.

2. Estos verbos son seguidos por un Gerundio


Enjoy – avoid - keep - practice - consider - think about - imagine –
finish

VERB Enjoy = disfrutar


GERUND I enjoy teaching. (yo disfruto enseñar)
INFINITIVE x I enjoy to teach

VERB Avoid = evitar


GERUND She avoids eating dessert. (ella evita comer postres)
INFINITIVE x She avoids to eat dessert

VERB Stop = detener / dejar


GERUND Peter stopped smoking. (Peter dejó de fumar)
INFINITIVE x Peter stopped to smoke.

3. Estos verbos son seguidos por un Infinitivo


Want – learn – decide - try - help – promise - plan - hope

VERB
GERUND x I want learning English.
INFINITIVE I want to learn English. (yo quiero aprender inglés)
