16th Street Mall at Denver

The 16th Street Mall is a pedestrian and transit mall in Denver, Colorado. It is designed by famed
architect I.M. Pei. The mall, 1.25 miles (2 kilometres) long, runs along 16th Street in downtown
Denver, from Wewatta Street intersection of 16th Avenue and Broadway. The intricate granite stone
sidewalks and streets were designed by architect to resemble the scale pattern of the Western
Diamondback Rattlesnake. It is home to over 300 locally owned/chain stores, over 50 restaurants, and
the Denver Pavilions.

What I learned on the successful of 16th Street Mall at Denver is given below:

16th Street Mall at Denver

1. It’s provided the entire downtown with shuttle bus circulation and high-quality pedestrian access to
Union Station.

2. Designed by famed architect I.M. Pei, the pedestrian promenade is made of red, white and grey granite
in a repeating pattern that, seen from above, resembles the skin of a diamondback rattlesnake.
3. There has A free shuttle bus service, operated by the Regional Transportation District (RTD), which is
known as the Free Mall Ride.

4. Free shuttle buses, dubbed the mall ride, travel up and down the 16th Street Mall stopping on every
corner. Hop on and hop off as the shuttles come and go every few minutes and make everything
downtown easy to reach

5. The mall offers Denver's best people watching. There are 42 outdoor cafés along the mall, making it
the perfect place to grab a bite to eat or have a drink.

6. Denver Pavilions, near the south end of the mall, is a shopping and dining complex with 12 movie
theatres and more than two dozen shops and restaurants.

7. For more than 30 years, the 16th Street Mall has been the most visited destination in Denver.

8. It’s success as a place has to do with its edge uses, over 300 shops and 50 restaurants that line the
Mall with cafes, window displays, and buskers.
7. At the north end of the mall, 16th Street continues as a pedestrian path over three bridges connecting
downtown to common park and lohi, a hip neighbourhood filled with restaurants and brewpubs. Points of
interest along the mall include the Daniel & Fish Tower, a two-thirds replica of the Campanile of St. Mark's in
Venice that was the highest building west of the Mississippi when it was built in 1909.

8. There’s beautiful holiday lightning all over the 16th St. mall, next to Arapahoe is the street a
Christmas market that is a German style. There are old upright pianos along the mall- wonderful to
be able to sit down and play and listen to some talented musicians.

I learned on the successful of 16th Street Mall at Denver is, the 16th Street Mall has been the most visited
destination in Denver. The Mall’s rich history and its keep role as a vital connector and important public
space. It has a safe, welcoming and inclusive environment. It has a centralized corridor of plantings, and street
furniture. Lofts, restaurants, shops, and theatres line this dynamic space, which includes a gracious 22-foot-
wide, tree-lined promenade flanked on both sides by subtly depressed transit lanes and widened sidewalks.

For these reason 16th Street Mall at Denver have become a famous place.
State Street, Chicago
s

State Street is a large south-north street in Chicago, Illinois, USA and its south suburbs. It begins at
North Avenue, the south end of Lincoln Park, runs south through the heart of Downtown Chicago, and
ends at the southern city limits, intersecting 127th Street along the bank of the Little Calumet River. It
resumes north of 137th Street in Riverdale and runs south intermittently through Chicago's south sub-
urbs until terminating at New Monee Road in Crete, Illinois.

Here are the reasons why the first design attempt to make the street vibrant fail at the State Street Chi-
cago:

1. Opened in 1979, the State Street Mall was designed to improve the efficiency of the bus system, reduce noise
and air pollution, and enhance the pedestrian as well as shopping experience on State Street.

2. This transit mall, which cut across nine blocks, prohibited private automobiles on the street (except for the
east-west traffic), and only allowed buses and emergency vehicles. Wider sidewalks, bus shelters, and subway
entrances were also the new features of the transit mall
3. In 1979, under Mayor Jane Byrne, the city closed the Loop’s main retail corridor to all forms of traffic except
buses, taxis and delivery vehicles in an effort to bring back customers who had been drawn away to suburban
shopping centres and the burgeoning Magnificent Mile. For That one had to detour around State and access.
addresses along the strip via intersecting east-west streets

4. The State Street Mall did not work out because it cut the street off from the rest of the Loop and took
away its excitement. The car ban meant one couldn’t drop anyone off in front of the Field’s entrance
anymore.

Street Development Scheme

In my opinion the following are the things that are success of a road improvement project:

Tidy up – Look to remove unnecessary road markings or broken street

furniture which is simple to clear up and will not damage the footway

De-clutter – Requires a more strategic justification for every individual

piece of equipment in the street, with the presumption of removal unless a
clear reason for retention is given.

Relocate or merge functions – Any remaining features should be

rationalised to combine signage and lighting or better locate street furniture
to fulfil its intended use

Rethink traffic management options – By considering user

priority, changes to carriageway widths or removal of traffic signals

Recreate the street – Complete remodelling of the street may be suitable if a

new set of objectives or character is desired, such as by creating a shared surface.
This approach is not suitable in all locations and requires extensive consultation.
George Street, Sydney

George Street is a street in the central business district of Sydney in New South Wales, Australia.
It was Sydney's original high street, and remains one of the busiest streets in the city centre. It connects a
number of the city's most important buildings and precincts. There are more high rise buildings here than
on any other street in Australia. Amongst Australia's 100 largest listed companies, more are located here
than on any other street.

The design principles and other support that made George Street, Sydney successful is given below:

1. Pedestrian:
Along the new pedestrian zone, the street has been made level with the footpaths. paved in dark grey granite,
with the rails set in a ribbon of light grey stone for increased visibility. Only approved local traffic vehicles
will be permitted in the pedestrian zone where pedestrians and light rail vehicles will be given priority.

Street Furniture:
2. Sydney’s public domain furniture palette of seating, garbage bins, pedestrian light poles, water fountains, tree
guards/grate throughout. This award-winning furniture palette, designed for the City by Tannes, has two suites of
elements— stainless steel for the city centre, and a ‘bronze’ suite for surrounding suburbs and ‘villages’.

Light Rail Corridor:

3. The CBD and South East Light Rail is a new light rail network for Sydney. The 12km route features 19 stops,
extending from Circular Quay along George Street to Central station, through Surry Hills to Moore Park, then
to Kensington and Kingsford via Anzac Parade and Randwick via Alison Road and High Street. Power for a part
of the CBD and South East Light Rail line is delivered via a third rail in the pedestrian zone and with new
Smart Poles also in this section, there are no overhead cables in this part of the city.
