Assignment 1:

The aim of this assignment is to develop your academic writing skills and academic style while
learning about the contribution of communication to building the therapeutic relationship in
nursing. This task involves writing an introduction, a paragraph on the provided topic (relationship
between effective communication and the therapeutic relationship), a conclusion and writing an
end-text reference list. On completion of this assignment, you will receive feedback on the areas you
need to improve in your academic writing, paraphrasing, and referencing for future assignments.

This assessment is due: Week 5 Friday, 27/08/2021, 5 PM

Assignment instructions:

There are four parts to this assessment:

Part 1: Introduction to the topic (approximately 100 words).

Part 2: Discuss the importance of effective communication in developing the therapeutic relationship.
(approx. 500 words).

You need to write your responses to this topic in well paraphrased paragraphs.

Six articles have been chosen for your use for this assignment (see page 2). You are to use
(paraphrase) these journal articles as you write your well-constructed paragraphs. You will
also need to find at least two additional scholarly articles related to the topic.

Prior to completing your task, it is recommended that you review Module 6 of the Academic
Skills Online Modules, attend the targeted workshop for assignment 1 and access the
generic academic skills workshops on paraphrasing, referencing and writing academic
paragraphs.

Your paragraphs must:

▪ Have a clear topic sentence.


▪ Supporting sentences where paraphrases from selected extracts are included to support
your main idea in a logical manner. All paraphrasing must be correctly in-text referenced
(in APA 7th style).
▪ Use appropriate academic language/style.
▪ Include complete well-constructed sentences.
▪ Have a concluding sentence.

Part 3: Conclusion

Part 4: Write an end-text reference list of your sources using APA 7th style (including the six articles
as well as any additional references you have sourced). You will need to access the academic sources
provided using the ECU library systems to find all the bibliographic details needed to write the end-
text reference list. You can find a sample end-text reference list on the ECU Referencing Library
Guide
