Course Title: Fluid Mechanics I Time: 2 hours.
(USE SEPARATE ANSWER SCRIPT FOR EACH PART)

PART A
(There are THREE Questions in this Part. Answer any TWO)

1 a) 3
The velocity distribution for flow over a flat plate is given by 𝑢𝑢 = 2 𝑦𝑦 − 𝑦𝑦 2 , where u is the point
velocity in meter per second at a distance y meter above the plate. Determine the shear stress at 07
y = 9 cm. Assume dynamic viscosity as 8 poise.
b) Two plates are placed at a distance of 0.15 mm apart. The lower part is fixed while the upper
plate having surface area 1.0 m2 is pulled at 0.3 m/s. Find the force and power required to 08
maintain this speed if the fluid separating them is having viscosity 1.5 poise.

2 a) A differential manometer is connected at the two points A and B as shown in Fig. for Q. 2(a).
At B, air pressure is 7.848 N/cm2(abs), find the absolute pressure at A.

b) Determine the gauge and absolute pressure at a point which is 2.0 m below the free surface of 07
water. Take atmospheric pressure as 10.1043 N/cm2.

3 a) Determine the total pressure and center of pressure on an isosceles triangular plate of base 5m 10
and altitude 5m when the plate is immersed vertically in an oil of sp. Gr. 0.8. The base of the
plate is 1m below the free surface of oil.
b) What do you understand by ‘total pressure’ and ‘center of pressure’? 05

PART B

The velocity and diameter at point (3) is 8.8 m/s and 80 mm respectively as shown in Fig. for Q
4(b). Find the power developed by water turbine, P.

5 a) If the average velocity in pipe1 is 3 m/s, find

07
i. discharge through pipe1 and

ii. velocity in pipe 3 if average velocity in pipe 2 is 2.5 m/s.

Find the power required by the pump.

6 a) Differentiate between notch and weir. 05

b) Water flows over a rectangular weir 1m wide at a depth of 150 mm and afterwards passes 10
through a triangular right-angle weir. Taking Cd for the rectangular and triangular weir as 0.62
and 0.59 respectively. Find the depth over the triangular weir.
