the different types of test.

Type of Test Do’s and Don’ts in Test Construction

-Do not give a hint in the body of the question
-Avoid adverbs that tend to be always true or always false
-Do not quote verbatim from reference, materials or textbooks.
True or
-Avoid a grossly disproportionate number of either true or false
False
statement or even a patterns in the occurrence of true or false
statement.
-Discourage the use of negative statements
-Do not use unfamiliar words, terms and phrases

from one person to the next

-Each item should be as short as possible
-All multiple choice options should be grammatically consistent with
Multiple
the stem
Choice
-Avoid stems that reveal the answer to another item
-Use negatively stated stems sparingly and when using negatives
such as NOT, underline or bold the print.
-Use none of the above and all of the above sparingly, and when you
do use them, don't always make them the right answer.
-Only one option should be correct or clearly best.
-The list of responses should be relatively short.
-Response options should be arranged alphabetically or numerically.
Matching -Directions clearly indicate the basis for matching.
Type -Position of matches should be varied. Avoid using patterns.
-The choices of each matching set should be on one page
-There are more responses than premises in a single set if responses
-Require definite clear-cut, short-term answer
-Don’t take statements directly from textbook to use as a basis for
short items
-A direct question is generally desirable than incomplete statements
-When the answer is to be expressed in numerical units, indicate the
Supply Type
type of answer required
-Blanks for answer should be equal in length
-Don’t have too many blanks in an item
-The items in this kind of test consist of a stem and a blank where
the students would write the correct answer
Essay -Phrase the direction in such a way that students are guided on the
key concepts to be included.
-Inform the students on the criteria to be used for grading their
essays. -Put a time limit on the essay test
-Decide on your essay grading system prior to getting the essays of
your students
-Evaluate answers to essay questions without knowing the identity of
the writer
-Whenever possible, have two or more persons grade each answer
-The task is clearly defined. The students are given an idea on the
scope and direction you intended for the answer to take.

B. Directions: Explain what makes the following test items incorrect.

1. The poem “The Raven” ______

A. was written by Edgar Allan Poe

B. was written by Elizabeth Browning

C. was written by Omar Khayyan

D. was written by Jose Garcia Villa

Explanation: It is already given that “The Raven” is a poem so no

need for you to put “The Poem” in your question, again it may sound
redundant. The construction of the question must be “The Raven”
was written by _________?

2. When did the People Power Revolution take in the Philippines?

A. February 23, 1986

B. after the Snap Election

C. March 1, 1956

D. after Valentines’ Day in 1986

Explanation: Common sense that the People Power Revolution took

place in the Philippines so no need for you to include it in your
question because it may sound redundant, much better if the
construction of the question is “When did the People Power
Revolution Began?"

3. Who was the author of the book quoted in the footnote of Chapter 1 of the
present textbook?

Explanation: Once you construct or create a question it must be

clear and make sure that the students will understand it because
base from the given question the construction of the sentence is not
clear.

4. _______________________ is the 16 th president of ________________.

Explanation: Base from the things that you need to consider in

constructing the different types of test, “don’t have to many blanks
in an item” so from the given question itself it is very hard for the
students to answer.

5. Directions: Match the following.

1. Food A. Primary reinforce

2. Psychoanalysis B. Sigmund Freud

3. B.F. Skinner C. Operant conditioning

4. Standard deviation D. Measure of variability

5. Schizophrenia E. Hallucinations
Explanation: According to the things that you need to consider in
constructing a test “Position of matches should be varied. Avoid using
pattern. So if you’re going to answer the given matching type there is a
pattern because the answer from number 1 is letter A, number 2 is letter B,
number 3 is letter C, number 4 is letter D, and number 5 is letter E, so as
you can see there is a pattern so you need to avoid it.
