INST RUCT IONS T O CANDIDAT ES :

1. Attempt any FIVE question(s), ea ch que stion c arrie s 12 marks.

1. A single-cylinder, single-acting air compressor running at 300 rpm is driven by 25kW

electric motor. The mechanical efficiency between motor-compressor is 85%. The
induction conditions of air are 1.013 bar and 288K, and the delivery pressure is 10 bar.
Calculate the free air delivery in cu.m/min, volumetric efficiency and bore and stroke of the
compressor. Take n=1.3 and assume that bore is equal to stroke (D=L).

2. The percentage composition of sample of liquid fuel by weight is,

C = 84.6 %, and H2 = 15.4 %. Calculate :

a) The weight of air needed for the combustion of 1 kg of fuel ;

b) The volumetric composition of the products of combustion if 20% excess air is

supplied.

3. A steam power plant operates on a theoretical reheat cycle. Steam at boiler at 150 bar,
500°C expands through the high pressure turbine. It is reheated at a constant pressure of
45 bar to 500°C and expands through the low pressure turbine to a condenser at 0.2 bar.
Draw T-s and h-s diagrams. Find :

a) Quality of steam at turbine exhaust

b) Cycle efficiency

c) Steam rate in kg/kWh

4. In a stage of an impulse turbine provided with a single row wheel, the mean diameter of
blade ring is 0.85 m and the speed of rotation is 3500 rpm. The steam issues from the
nozzle with a velocity of 350 m/s and the nozzle angle is 18°. The blades are equiangular
and blade coefficient is 0.88. Determine the power developed in the blades when the axial
thrust on the blade is 250 N. Also determine the diagram efficiency.

5. A condenser deals with 1000 kg of steam per hour with a dryness fraction of 0.88. The
temperature of condenser is 38°C. The air associated with the steam in the condenser is 250
kg/hour. Determine the vacuum reading while barometer reads 75.5 cm of Hg. Correct this
vacuum to a standard barometer reading of 76 cm of Hg.

6. Determine the throat area, exit area and exit velocity for a steam nozzle to discharge 0.3
kg/s when the inlet conditions are 15 bar and 500K, and the discharge pressure is 3 bar.
Assume the expansion through the nozzle is isentropic and the inlet velocity is negligible.
Take the value of n = 1.3 for superheated steam.

7. a) Enumerate the various factors while considering the selection the boiler.

b) Explain the unique properties of the high pressure boilers.

8. How will you classify the steam condensers? In what aspects jet condenser differs from a
surface condenser? Explain.
