Solving Problems involving Algebraic expressions
Once you know what is going on in the problem, you can write an algebraic
expression that represents the problem. Represent the value that you are looking
for with a variable. Use this variable in your algebraic expression. To get the
answer, solve your algebraic expression.
What’s In
Let’s Do It This Way: Solve the given problems involving algebraic expressions.
Answer the guide questions that follow. Write your answer in your
Mathematics notebook.
In a fruit tray, there are a apples and b bananas. In a box, there are 6
apples and 8 bananas. What is the total number of fruits?
Guide Questions:
a. What expression represents apples and bananas in the fruit tray?
What expression represents apples and bananas in the box?
b. Formulate an expression relating to the fruits in the tray and the fruits in
the box.
c. Using the expressions, how will you determine the total number of fruits?
d. How did you get the final answer?
Before going ahead and solving this problem, you need to write an algebraic
expression. To do this, you need to carefully read the problems so you’ll know
exactly what the problem is and what you need to do. In reading carefully, you see
that there is an additional problem since it is asking you the total number of pieces of
fruits. So, how can you write this as a mathematical algebraic expression?
When you solve word problems, you have to translate verbal statements into
mathematical sentences or phrases. When a word problem involves two conditions,
you may be able to translate each condition into an equation. The numbers that
satisfy both equations at the same time represent the solution of the word problem.
.
Steps for Solving Word Problems
1. In a fruit tray, there are a apples and b bananas. In a box, there are
6 apples and 8 bananas. What is the total number of fruits?
Solution:
Step 1: Read and understand the problem.
Be sure to read and understand the problem.
If you are doubtful read it again.
Step 4: Answer
The answer is 6x -4.
Does the solution answer the question asked? Yes
Does it make sense? Yes! In solving for the perimeter of a rectangle, simply
add all the measurements of the sides.
Step 5:Check.
Check the answer in the original problem.
The length of the rectangle is2x + 3twice a number increased by 3.
The width of the rectangle is x -5 a number decreased by 5.
To get the perimeter, simply add (l + l + w + w),
So we have (2x + 3) + (2x + 3) + (x – 5) + (x – 5).
In combining like terms, we have (2x +2 x + x + x) and
[(3) + (3) + (-5) + (-5)].
The perimeter of a rectangle is 6x – 4.
I hope everything is clearer now. In dealing with word problems all you need is
perseverance and determination. You’ll need to come up with your own algebraic
expressions.
What’s More
B. What is the most difficult part you encounter as you go through the lesson?
What will you do to better understand the lesson on your own?
C. How are you going to use your knowledge of the topic in your day to day life?
