Multimedia Application
9.1. Video-On demand

Video-On demand (VOD) services represent a class of applications where video

information is accessed from one or more video servers.

VOD systems include many more components that are necessary for the provision
of a complete service, such as video servers, administration and maintenance
systems, networking services, backbone networks for linking geographically
distributed video servers and set-top units for receiving, demodulating, decoding
and converting video for television playback.

The best known application of VOD is the video library which uses Interactive
VOD. Interactive VOD allows a user to gain access to a movie via point-to-point
connection. This connection allows the user individual and instantaneous control
of storage medium in terms of start, fast forward, pause and fast rewind.

There are two basic types of interactive VOD service:

 Interactive VOD with instantaneous access

User can instantly retrieve and individually control program information
from a library instantly, with instant control response.
  Interactive VOD with delayed access
User can retrieve and individually control program information from a
library, but there is a waiting time depending on the available bandwidth
resources in the network.

9.2. Video Conferencing

Video Conferencing allows the people to work together across geographically

distant locations without the need to meet at one site. They communicate with
each other in multi-party or face-to-face mode using motion video, audio and
textual information in each direction.

Video conferencing is used either in an office environment, where the video is

displayed on a PC or workstation screen, or in a conference room, where the
video is displayed in a video wall.

9.3. Educational Application, Industrial Application

Educational Application
The multimedia application helps us do boost ourselves to much more application
aspects including the education. Now instead of using the old books and
institutions, it has been advanced to the internet. Anyone can access any
educational need from the desired place. The remote education is one of the
present educational applications.
 The first scenario is a group of people sitting together in one location with
the necessary equipment needed for their remote education. The remotely
located teacher gives a lecture to the group.
  The second scenario is individual tutoring, where there is no need for the
students to be located together. Both the student and the teacher have a
PC with a monitor, keyboard and other devices. A video-phone can also be
added to allow interactive conversion. The teacher may distribute and
receive papers to and from students using e-mail.

Industrial Application
The industrial applications basically use multimedia for different purposes.

 Modeling
 AI
 HRMS (Human Resource Management System)

9.3. Information System, Multimedia archives & digital libraries, Media editors
Information system
The biggest information source is the Internet. Any information can be accessed
using it. The devices like PC, laptops, Smartphone, etc with their high
performance abilities help to get information with ease.

Multimedia archives & digital libraries

There are many websites and application that are offering e-book and e-library
options. Any desired book can be read online or offline. Websites like scribd.com,
pdfdrive.net, LinkedIn, etc. Not only books, any documents, audio or video
tutorials also can be easily linked up and accessed.

Media editors are the applications that help to edit any media easily.
