Clothes
● Jeans: 4 to 6 pairs

● Night clothes: 2-3 pairs
● Formal suit & Ties: 1-2 pairs (For ceremonies, interviews, job fairs etc.)
● Undergarments: 10-15 pairs
● Socks: 8-10 pairs (cotton socks preferred. Don’t forget a couple of formal ones)
● Full sleeved Sweater: 1
● Jacket: 2 (Bring if you have one, otherwise you can get good ones here)
● Belts: 2 (one formal, one informal)
● Kurta-pyjamas/Churidar/Sari/Ghagra Choli: 2-3 (for ICGT events)

Shoes
● Tennis shoes: 1 pair
● Formal shoes: 1 pair
● Rain boots: 1 pair
● Sandals: 1 pair
● Flip-flops: 1 pair

Miscellaneous Items

emergency)

Utensils
● Pressure cooker (1.5 liters): 1 [Remember to get an extra gasket]
While it is possible for roommates to share the use of the pressure cooker, when going
on internships, you will each need a separate one. Would be better for each person to
buy a smaller capacity one.

You can buy all the items below at IKEA on 16th street for a relatively cheap price.
● Plates, glasses, cups and bowls, forks and spoons
● Coffee Mug: 1
● Serving spoons: 1
● Cutting Knives: 2
● Cooking vessels (Kadai/sauce pan/Deep Pot): 1
● Non-stick frying pan/tawa: 1
● Large plastic spoons, ladles and flipper/spatula: 1 each
● Hand-held peeler/grater: 1
● Tupperware boxes: 4-5

Food items
You can buy these at Indian Stores unless it is homemade. Be sure to label all food
items for ease of inspection by TSA officials. Also, check in advance if you can carry
spices you have bought. Some spices like cumin seeds are not allowed.
● Spices: Haldi, Dhania, Jeera, Garam masala, red chili, Asafoetida/Hing powder
● Mustard and Jeera seeds, Elaichi, Clove, Cinnamon, Bayleaf
● Ready Made Masalas: Rajma, Channa, Pav Bhaji, Tandoori/Butter Chicken,
Sambar Powder
● Tamarind paste
● Rice, Moong and toor dal in small quantity

● Well packaged and sealed homemade pickle

Stationary
● Pencils: 5-6
● Eraser: 1-2
● Notebook: 1-2
● Scribbling pads: 1-2
● Sticky note: 1-2
● Textbooks: As required by your course. Textbooks are expensive in the USA.

Tips
● Good winter clothes at affordable prices can be obtained in the USA. Do not
purchase any from India. Bring them if you already own them
● You will mostly be wearing shoes on campus, so make sure you get a pair and
have sufficient socks as you will do laundry once a week.
● Do not get too many food items. You may be screened by Customs and lose
everything.
● Talk to your roommates and try to divide the list of things you all plan to bring.
● Do not bring punches, papers etc. The measuring system is different in the USA
and they would be useless.
