ae, + Develop skills for your next role
When you join a new team, you must have something planned in the near future. You
‘may want to go on site or you may want to be promoted to PE or PM. Decide clearly
what you want to be, of course, this should be compatible with your experience level
and skills, you can't dream of becoming the CEO of the company with three years of
experience behind you.
Set up the frame of your mind to decide and achieve this goal. Once you identify the
goal, start getting ready to capture t Find out which skils and abilities are needed for
that role and develop it. Attend training courses if needed, find out related training
Material and go through it. When you start gaining confidence, work along with the
person who is already in that role, Voluntarily take some portion of work from him)
her and do it in your spare time. If you do it, sure enough, whenever a vacancy is
created for your dream role, you will the first candidate to be considered for that
Position.
ie, Be a good observer
After some time spent with the project, if you are a good observer, you will come to
know the team structure and changes that are likely to occur in the near future. At
least you should be able to predict changes accurately. Take note of them and find
‘out whether the vacancy for your next dream role is available or not.
Keep your eyes and ears open, watch the world around you carefully. Be aware of
the latest industry trends and developments in your work area. This will help you
predict the future and push yourself to fit in.
+ Market yourself
Marketing yourself is the best sort of marketing. It is not only important that you are
the right person, but it is also important that you make others aware that you are the
right person. Many people in the industry are really quite good, but all of them do not
go ahead. Only those who know how to market themselves can rise higher.
You might have seen incidences where you felt that an incapable person had been
promoted and a capable person is not promoted for years. It's truly your responsibility
that you make others aware of your skills. When you do any good work, you work for
long hours, you work hard to create solutions and make the client happy, ensure that
your PE knows this. You should earn the credit that you deserve.
Your immediate superior is the most important person for you. He/ She is the one
who will forward your reports to his bosses, his bosses will not know about you
directly. So when you identify a vacancy for your next dream role, market yourself for
this position. Many a times, nobody knows that you are most eligible candidate for a
new position and you lose the opportunity. To avoid this, Speak with your superior
regularly and make him/ her aware that you want to get in this position. When you
grab the opportunity, get set in that new role, Give it full justice and again look for the
next one. This is the key to grow up in the industry.
Similarly, when you face any problem at work, speak up. Give your superior a
complete description of the problem and also Possible solutions for it. Otherwise he/
she won't realise your problem and you may keep facing difficulties.
