TRADITIONAL FESTIVALS IN SOUTH AFRICA
The colonial and racial past of South Africa has left its mark in many of their
festivals. Locals have a special day to commemorate the end of apartheid without
forgetting the bloody days of 1976. The lives of hundreds of black children fighting
for equality in their upbringing had been lost. There is also room for music in the
middle of the main holidays, with some of the best rock and jazz as well as arts
festivals held in South Africa.
Day of Goodwill
Known as Mutual Understanding Day, it is an extension of Christmas when locals go to the
beach to hang out with their families and friends. This holiday has colonial origins when
the English took the day off to enjoy their gifts.
Cape Town Jazz Festival
This prestigious festival is one of the best in the world. Many local and international artists
such as the Cuban saxophonist Wayne Shorter, Youssou N'dour and Patricia Barber, among
others, meet here every year. The festival takes place in the Cape Town Convention Center,
where more than five stages are usually set up.
Oppikoppi Festival

This music festival has been celebrated near the city of Northem in South Africa since
1994. Although the main genre is rock, there are also hip hop, jazz, metal, electronic music
and house concerts. Every year important national and international artists take part in it.
