Practical No. 04

Aim: Determination of stresses and displacements in a 2D plate using ANSYS 14.0

Objectives:
1. To learn how to solve structural problems to calculate stress, strain, displacement and reaction
forces using ANSYS 14.0
2. How to apply boundary conditions, point and distributed loads
3. To understand how to analyze results
4. To explore the different facilities available in the ANSYS 14.0

Problem Definition
The corner bracket is to be built from a 20 mm thick steel plate. A figure of the plate is shown below.
This plate will be fixed at the two small holes on the left and have a load applied to the larger hole on
the right

Static Analysis of a Simple Bracket

A) Defining the Basic Geometry
We are going to create this geometry using Boolean operations. These procedures make it easy
to combine simple geometric entities to create more complex bodies.
Steps:-
1) Create a planar rectangular area.
Preprocessor
>>Modelling>>Create>>Areas>>Rectangle >>By 2 corners

Use dimensions:

WP X 0
WP Y 0
width 80
height 100

This creates a 80 by 100 rectangle with its origin at (0,0).

2) Create solid circles.
>>Preprocessor: >>Modelling >>Create >>Areas >>Circle >>Solid Circle
Enter the parameters in the dialog box as shown below:

parameter circle 1
WP X 80
WP Y 50
Radius 50

Now, create a second and third circle for the left hand side.
Use following dimensions:
parameter circle 2 circle 3
WP X 0 0
WP Y 20 80
Radius 20 20

3) Create rectangle on the left hand end to fill between the two small circles.
Create a rectangle with-

WP X -20
WP Y 20
width 20
height 60

4) Add all the five area into one area.

>>Preprocessor>>Modelling >>Operate>>Boolean >>Add >>Areas
>>Pick all>>Apply
5) Create three circles with the parameters

parameter circle 1 circle 2 circle 3

WP X 80 0 0
WP Y 50 20 80
radius 30 10 10

6) Bolt holes in the circles created.

>>Preprocessor>>Modelling >>Operate>>Boolean >>Substract>>Areas
>>Select Base Area and press OK>>Select Areas to substract and press APPLY.

B) Elements:
7) Define elemental properties:
>>Preprocessor>>Element Type>>Add/Edit/Delete >>Add >>Select Solid and 8 node
Quad 82 element>>OK>>Options>>K3 label -- select Plane strs w/thk.>>K5 label
Select nodal stress.>>OK

8) Assign properties to the element:

-Preprocessor
a)Real Constants
>>Thickness -- THK 20>>Ok>>Close

b) Material Props
>>Material Models>>Structural>>Linear>>Elastic>>Isotropic>>EX -- 200e3
>>PRXY -- 0.3

C) Meshing:

9) Now, mesh the region.

- >>Preprocessor >>Meshing >>Mesh tool>>Global set SIZE 5>>Mesh>>Pick all
>>OK
D) Loads And Constraints:
10). Apply the loads and constraints to the body Solution
>>Analysis type>>New analysis>>Click Static>>OK
11)Apply constraints.
We will now fix the two holes on the left side of the plate.Zoom on one hole.
>>Loads>>Define load>>Apply>>Structural>>Displacement>> nodes>>Pick the
circle>>Ok
Now fix all DOF at the nodes to zero.Repeat above procedure for the second hole.
12)Now apply a single vertical load to the large bolt hole.-Loads
>>Define loads>>Apply>>Structural >>Force/Moment>>On nodes>>Direction --
>>Value -- -1000>>OK
E) Solution:
13) Solve.-Solutioon
>>Solve>>Current LS>>OK
F) Post Processing - Viewing the Results:
14) View the results.
General Postproc
a) Read results
>>Last set
b) Plot results
>>Deformed Shape>>Click Def + undeformed>>OK

15) Take look at the stress contours for the plate.

- >>General Postproc >>Plot results >>Contour plo>>Nodal solution>>Stress
>>von Mises stress >>-OK
