1 Read the magazine article about the history of sugar. Number the sentences in the correct order.

Sweet History

Sugar comes from South East Asia and was first produced in India in very ancient times. It was first used as
a juice until it was discovered how to turn the juice into sugar crystals in the 5 th century. The first sugar
plantations were established in China in the 7th century. Sugar was first brought to Europe by the soldiers of
Alexander the Great who brought it back with them from India. During the 12 th century, sugar was grown by
the Venetians in the Middle East, and Venice became the main supplier of sugar to Europe.

Sugar cane was taken to America by Christopher Columbus and was grown there. The Portuguese also took
sugarcane to Brazil and grew sugar there. Slaves were taken from Africa to America to grow the sugar. The
sugar from America was then imported back to Europe and, by the 19 th century, sugar was eaten by
everyone. Jacub Rad invented sugar cubes in 1843. Now, sugar is found in nearly all kinds of food.
Unfortunately, it causes obesity.

By the 19th century, everyone in Europe was eating sugar.

Slaves grew the sugar in America, and the sugar was exported to Europe.
