Abstract— This paper presents a small dual notched band printed monopole antenna. Dimen-
sions of the antenna are 32 mm×29.3 mm×1.6 mm. The antenna is designed for Ultra-Wide Band
(UWB) applications. The impedance bandwidth of the antenna is 2.9–16 GHz with VSWR < 2,
except the bandwidth of 3.1–4.1 GHz and 4.9–5.9 GHz, used for WiMAX and WLAN applica-
tions respectively. A large wide slot is added to the radiating patch to obtain the stop band
of 3.1–4.1 GHz and a small narrow slot is used to obtain the stop band of 4.9–5.9 GHz. The
presented design is printed on a FR4 low cost dielectric substrate. The antenna is simulated
using Agilent Advance Design System. Radiation pattern, VSWR and various other parameters
are also discussed in detail.

1. INTRODUCTION
The Federal Communication Commission allocated the frequency band from 3.1 GHz to 10.6 GHz
for commercial wireless communication applications in 2002 [1]. In recent years, the printed
monopole antennas are very popular due to simple structure, easy fabrication and low cost. Various
printed monopole antennas have been proposed and designed for ultra wide-band applications [2–
5]. Notched characteristics are proposed to minimize interference and obtain multi notched bands.
Various methods are used to obtain band notched characteristics [4–13]. These methods are based
on cutting slots in the radiator, ground or feed line. Examples include adding T slots, E slots,
circular slots, split ring resonators, L slots, simple square slots etc. Various other types of slots are
also used for notched characteristics [6–13].
This paper presents a small and simple structure printed dual notched bands monopole antenna
with a size of 32 mm × 29.3 mm × 1.6 mm. Two simple rectangular slots are used to obtain dual
stop bands. The presented design is printed on a FR4 low cost dielectric substrate. The antenna
is simulated using Agilent Advance Design System.
2. ANTENNA DESIGN
The configuration and geometry of proposed design is shown in Figure 1(a). The length and width
of the presented design are 32 mm and 29.3 mm respectively. The length of the radiating patch is
20 mm; the upper and lower width of the radiating patch are 21.5 mm and 15.6 mm respectively.
The gap between radiating patch and ground is 0.4 mm. The length and width of the ground plane
are 11.6 mm and 29.3 mm respectively. The length and width of feed line are 12 mm and 2.2 mm
respectively. The length between two slots is 7 mm. The proposed antenna is printed on a FR4 low
cost dielectric substrate having a loss tangent of 0.02, a relative permittivity of 4.6, and a thickness
of 1.6 mm.
The frequency band-notch is created by adding a slot to the patch or ground. When a band-notch
design is applied to the antenna, no extra work is required for the existing antenna dimensions.
To obtain the notched band from 3.1 GHz to 4.1 GHz used for WiMAX application, a large wide
12.6 mm × 0.6 mm slot is added to the patch. To obtain the notched band from 4.9 GHz to 5.9 GHz
used for WLAN application, a small narrow 7.85 mm × 0.4 mm slot is added to the patch. The
notched frequency is determined from the postulate, which is given as [13]:
c
fnotch = √
4L εr + 1/2
The geometry and simulated VSWR of single notched band printed monopole antenna are also
shown in Figure 2 and Figure 3 for better understanding.

3. RESULTS AND DISCUSSION

The antenna is simulated using Agilent Advance Design System. Simulated VSWR and band
rejection characteristics are illustrated in Figure 1. The simulated results show that the proposed
antenna covers entire UWB band with VSWR ≤ 2, and stop band of 3.1–4.1 GHz and 4.9–5.9 GHz
with VSWR > 2. The simulated Radiation patterns at various frequencies of 3.2 GHz, 8.5 GHz and
12.8 GHz in E plane and H plane are shown in Figure 4, which show that the antenna has nearly
omnidirectional radiation pattern.

4. CONCLUSION
In this article, a printed dual notched band UWB printed monopole antenna is presented. Two slots
are added to create dual notched bands. The dimensions of the presented antenna were optimized
to achieve dual notched band operations and good VSWR response over entire UWB frequency
band. Simulated results show that the proposed antenna is suitable for UWB applications. The
antenna has small size and simple structure and can be used in multiple wireless communications.
