2020 IMPACT

Beer proves resilient in off-trade, though craft beer is hit by restrictions

on the operations of on-trade outlets
In terms of off-trade sales, beer was less impacted by the COVID-19 crisis than other areas of
alcoholic drinks in 2020, as the category’s low price and low alcohol content make it suitable for
home consumption. Beer purchases made at independent small grocers witnessed an increase
in average ticket because instead of purchasing just one bottle consumers moved to six-packs
as restrictions on the operations of on-trade outlets and consumer concerns about exposure to
the SARS-CoV-2 virus that causes COVID-19 led to a shift towards home consumption.
Moreover, concerned about viral transmission through social contact, consumers opted for
larger-scale purchases in order to reduce the frequency of shopping trips. Multi-packs of beer
have become increasingly common in independent small grocers and even leading company,
Bavaria, is introducing bigger formats of 12-bottle packs in the channel. Such moves are aimed
at compensating for the decline in some channels by focusing on others that are more dynamic,
such as e-commerce, which is seeing growth supported by the expansion of apps like Rappi
and Cornershop. Central Cervecera de Colombia is selling packs of 24 beers, at lower prices
than a 750ml bottle of aguardiente. A larger, 1 litre format from Bavaria’s Aguila and Poker
brands, which is ideal for sharing with family or friends, also proved successful during 2020.
Bottles are returnable, and consumers can save COP400 if they return the bottle (the product
costs around COP4,000).
Craft beers have been strongly impacted during 2020 because of the pandemic and the
closure of consumer foodservice outlets. Craft beers in Colombia rely heavily on consumer
foodservice, mostly through pubs and alliances with some restaurants, and few are present in
retail chains. The high cost to enter retail chains and gain visibility and space at retailers’
shelves requires financial muscle that many craft beer producers still do not have. E-commerce
has become an alternative for many of them, enabling them to directly serve their customers.

Targeting new consumption occasions

In 2020, new consumption occasions emerged as a result of the pandemic. Consumers
increasingly allowed themselves to have a beer with lunch or after work, as remote working
continued for many throughout the year. Targeting opportunities related to new consumption

occasions, Bavaria launched Bavaria 0.0, containing no alcohol, as it looked to satisfy the desire
for a refreshing drink that offers a little indulgence and provides an alternative to carbonates.
With consumers adopting healthier habits, such as increasing interest in practising sports,
Bavaria 0.0 offers opportunities for expansion.

2020 sees increase in fragmentation in beer

Bavaria remained dominant in beer in 2020, though changing distribution patterns, including
an upturn in the share of the largest channel, independent small grocers, and the dynamic
expansion of e-commerce, led to increased fragmentation in the category. Indeed, the top three
players – the only ones to register a more than negligible individual volume share - all
experienced share erosion during the year. Independent small grocers benefited from
consumers looking to make purchases close to home in order to reduce their risk of exposure to
the SARS-CoV-2 virus in large, crowded stores, while shopping online also appealed to
consumers looking to avoid social contact. Prior to the pandemic, beer was seeing a growing
emphasis on modern grocery retailing, with supermarkets and hypermarkets benefiting from
changes in the distribution strategies of the main companies. The entrance of Andina in
February 2019 led to strong competition in this channel. Bavaria responded by increasing the
presence of Aguila, and renewing its image.

RECOVERY AND OPPORTUNITIES

Return to growth in 2021

Beer is expected to return to growth and exceed pre-COVID-19 volumes in 2021, with an
accelerated rate of expansion in off-trade sales and an improved performance in the on-trade
channel as it benefits from the reopening of consumer foodservice establishments and the fact
that beer is more affordable than other alcoholic drinks and suitable for a broader range of
consumption occasions. Imported premium lager, which significantly outperformed the overall
beer category in 2020, is set to continue to see robust growth during the forecast period. Having
moved into the off-trade in order to compensate for the loss of on-trade sales during the
pandemic, imported premium lager will benefit from an expanded consumer base. Mid-priced
lager, which accounts for the largest portion of volume sales, is expected to return to growth by
2021, though it is not set to see on-trade growth until 2022, as it benefits from the opening of
different establishments, such as canchas de tejo, where the traditional throwing game of tejo is
usually accompanied with beer.

Revival of shift to modern grocery retailing

Beer has historically been sold through traditional channels, with independent small grocers
being the main distribution channel. Independent small grocers gained further volume share
during the COVID-19 crisis as many consumers opted to shop close to home, although others
chose to pick up beer in one-stop shops at supermarkets and hypermarkets in order to reduce
the frequency of shopping trips and the number of outlets visited. Prior to the pandemic, there
had been a gradual, though not entirely consistent, trend towards modern grocery retailing in
beer, supported by the distribution strategies of major players and the impact of ongoing
urbanisation on consumer lifestyles. While independent small grocers is set to remain the
dominant distribution channel, the forecast period is likely to see the further development of
supermarkets and hypermarkets in the category as busy urban consumers focus on
convenience in shopping. This will provide an opportunity for the further development of
premium brands and the development of new occasions for consumption at home.

Growing interest in craft beer

The craft beer segment is expected to recover momentum in 2021-2022, supported by the
revival of on-trade sales. Consumers are showing growing curiosity about new products, and
craft producers that brew at their pubs have been making efforts to launch differentiated
products. In addition, the pandemic has encouraged the purchase of local products in order to
support local business-people.

CATEGORY BACKGROUND

Lager price band methodology

▪ In 2020, mid-priced beer was negatively impacted by the COVID-19 pandemic. Amongst the
key brands to see poor performances during the year were the domestic brands, Aguila and
Poker, and the imported mid-priced brands, Sol and Tecate. Global premium brands, such as
Budweiser, Corona, Stella Artois and Heineken, continued to strengthen their position in the
market in 2020.
▪ During 2020, metal beverage cans, in particular 269ml cans, registered a sharp increase in
demand. Larger, 1-litre bottles of brands like Aguila, Poker and Heineken also witnessed
increasing demand. This polarising demand slightly weakened the position of 330ml
presentations.
