Building and Enhance New Literacies Across the Curriculum

TASK 1: Read the summary of how Audrey Watters (2014) described the New Literacies in
her article, Changing Definitions of Literacy. It will be supported by ZachMiners et. al.
(2011) article about The New Literacies. These articles will help you understand how
learning technology nowadays can be considered as a new literacy.

Literacy used to mean only the ability to read and write; however, as time has passed,

literacy has come to mean more than just the ability to read and write. New literacies were

introduced, and it was evolving with the help of technology as time passed, and it helped us a lot,

especially now that we are in the midst of a pandemic. Because there is a deadly virus, we need

to stay at home as much as possible. New Literacies allows us to stay connected virtually and

continue our lives through the internet.

The quote by Leu et al. tells us that new literacies are important for us now because

they help us to stay connected with society and also help our education system to continue and it

didn't stop because new literacies help us to continue our studies even when we are unable to

attend school. ICT assists us in developing our skills and strategies for using technology; a

variety of materials/gadgets are now available in the market that we can easily purchase and

learn how to use so that we can remain connected to the new world inside the internet. Because
of the assistance provided by Globalization, we are able to embrace New Literacies and new

forms of communication. Since we are now in the twenty-first century, adapting to new literacies

and new technology is not as difficult as it once was, and we can now be globally competitive

because we embrace rapidly changing technology and information because we can benefit

greatly from it as well.

This made it easier for us to keep up with what was going on in our society, and it

taught us to be intelligent in gathering news and trends. In our personal lives, new literacies play

an important role now that we are constantly connected to the internet, and new literacies help us

communicate with our loved ones who live far away. Embracing the new literacies was not

difficult to adapt to because we can benefit greatly from them, and the information and

knowledge that we gained at the new literacies was extremely beneficial to our future.
