Read the instructions in the boxes below; recording the child’s response before moving to the next instruction.
Ito ay aklat na may mga kwento at mga larawan. Huwag mo munang basahin. Sa pahinang ito
ituro mo sa akin kung saan ka magsimula.
[Child puts finger on the top row; left-most word] ○ Correct ○ Incorrect ○ No Response
Ngayon, ituro mo sa akin kung aling salita ang sunod mong babasahin.
[Child moves finger to left-most word of second line] ○ Correct ○ Incorrect ○ No Response
Show the child the sheet of letters in the student stimuli booklet. Say:
Ang pahinang ito ay puno ng mga titik. Bigkasin mo ang pangalan ng mga titik na alam mo — uulitin ko:
Pangalan at hindi tunog.
Nnaintindihan mo ba?
Kapag sinabi kong “magsimula na”, bigkasin kaagad ang pangalan ng mga titik. Magsimula dito at tuloy-tuloy
hanggang sa huling linya. [Point to the first letter on the row after the example and draw your finger across the
first line]. Kung hindi mo alam ang pangalan ng titik, tuturuan kita. Ngunit kung alam mo, makikinig lamang
ako. Handa ka na ba? Magsimula ka na.
Start the timer when the child reads the first letter: Follow along with your pencil and clearly mark
any incorrect letters with a slash ( / ). Count self-corrections as correct. If you’ve already marked the self-
corrected letter as incorrect, circle the letter and go on. Stay quiet, except when providing answers as follows: if
the child hesitates for 3 seconds, provide the name of the letter; point to the next letter and say “Magpatuloy
ka.” Mark the letter you provide to the child as incorrect. If the student gives you the letter sound rather than
the name, provide the letter name and say: [“Bigkasin ang pangalan ng titik”]. This prompt may be given only
once during the exercise.
AFTER 60 SECONDS SAY, “hinto.” Mark the final letter read with a bracket ( ] ).
Early stop rule: If the child does not give a single correct response on the first line, say “Salamat!”, discontinue
this exercise, check the box at the bottom, and go on to the next exercise.

Ito ay pagsasanay sa pakikinig. Bigkasin mo ang unang tunog ng bawat salita. Halimbawa, sa salitang
“pana”, /p/ ang unang tunog. Bigkasin mo ang unang tunog ng bawat salita na iyong maririnig. Babasahin ko

Read the prompt and then pronounce the target word a second time. Accept only as correct the isolated sound
(without a shwah). If the child does not respond after 3 seconds, mark as “No response” and say the next prompt.
Enunciate clearly; but do not overemphasize the beginning sound of each word.
Early stop rule: If the child responds incorrectly or does not respond to the first five words, say “Salamat!”,
discontinue this exercise, check the box at the bottom of the page, and go on to the next exercise.

Narito ang iba pang salita. Basahin mo nga ang mga salitang alam mo. Babasahin mo lamang ito at huwag
mong baybayin. Halimbawa, ang salitang ito ay : “mata”.
Magsanay tayo: Basahin mo nga ang salitang ito [point to the word “saya”]:
If the child responds correctly say: Tama, “saya”.
If the child does not respond correctly, say: “saya” ang salitang ito.

Show the child the sheet of invented words in the student stimuli booklet. Say:
Narito ang ilang pantig. Basahin ang mga pantig na alam mo. Basahin ito at huwag baybayin. Halimbawa:
“bak”.
Magsanay tayo: Basahin ang pantig na ito [point to next word: pay ].
[If the student says “pay”, say]: Tama, “pay”.
[If the student does not say “pay” correctly say]: “pay” ang pantig na ito.
Subukan natin ang ibang pantig: Basahin [point to the next word: man ].

[If the student does not say “man” correctly say]: “man” ito.
Start the timer when the child reads the first word. Follow along with your pencil and clearly mark any
incorrect words with a slash ( / ). Count self-corrections as correct. If you’ve already marked the self-corrected
letter as incorrect, circle the letter and go on. Consider the child’s option to read words in the context of his first
language. Stay quiet, when providing answers as follows: if the child hesitates for 3 seconds, provide the word,
point to the next word and say “Ipagpatuloy.” Mark the word you provide to the child as incorrect.

Start the timer when the child reads the first word. Follow along with your pencil and clearly mark any
