Relative atomic mass: Ar

An atom is so tiny that we can’t measure its mass in grams. Instead

Carbon -12 is taken as the standard and assigned a mass of 12 units.

Reason for using C-12 as standard:

1. Carbon is in solid state

2. They have equal number of protons and neutrons
3. They are abundant in nature.

Calculating atomic mass:

Element Symbol Ar
Carbon C 12
Hydrogen H 1
Oxygen O 16
Sodium Na 23
Sulfur S 32
Chlorine Cl 35.5

Why chlorine does has an Ar of 35.5?:

Ans: Chlorine has two isotopes. 75% of its atoms are chlorine 35, and 25%
are chlorine 37.
So Ar for chlorine = (75/100*35) + (25/100*37)= 35.5
