ENG104: Introduction to Engineering Design

Task 1: Communicating with engineering drawings.

Total Marks weighted 25% of the overall assessment.

Submission link opened: Friday week 4 (20th August)

Due Date: Friday Week 6(3rd September 2021)

Special instructions:

• All dimensions are given in mm

• A 2D1 CAD program (AutoCAD from USC labs) must be used to answer the two
questions.
• It is a good practice to start your solution with freehand drawing but you are not
required to submit your freehand drawing.
• All CAD drafting solutions must be appropriately scaled to fit A3 papers.
• “Print” each of your drawings as a pdf file and with the aid of a pdf compiler,
combine 2 the two drawings as a single file named:

“studentlastname_studentnumber_task1.pdf”

• You are required to submit this assignment via blackboard as a single pdf file named
as above.

1
You are not allowed to use 3D or solid modelling software for this task
2
See the tutorial on “AutoCAD: setting up drawing environment” for how to combine multiple drawings into
one pdf file,)
Q.1 Figure 1 below shows the isometric drawing of an engine component. Using a CAD
program, draw the following views

• a sectional front view through “A-A”

• a side view from the right-hand side (RHS)
• a top view
• a partial auxiliary of the inclined face

Present your views in a layout consistent with 3rd angle projection and scale appropriately
with border to fit A3 paper size.

Marking criteria (62%: Detailed Rubrics published on Bb)

• Views and layout

• Line conventions
• Dimensions
• Scaled to fit A3
• Border and title block
Q2. The multi-view engineering drawing below (Figure 2) represents the orthogonal views of
a jaw support. With the aid of CAD software, draw and scale to fit A3 paper the full isometric
diagram for the jaw support. Assume symmetry where necessary. There is no need to include
dimensions in your isometric drawing but important to scale appropriately to fit on an A3
sheet.
