COMMUNITY NEEDS ASSESSMENT

Dynamics in the community

• The school-community relations constitute a vital function area in the
educational system.
• Close school-community relations must be established and maintained in
order to make the school more serviceable and responsive to the needs of
the community and to draw the community to the school.
• The school is the extension of the community and vice-versa.
• Dynamics in the community should be taken into consideration considering
the fact that today’s society is beset with so many problems.
Assessment of community needs
• It is a process of identifying the strength and resources available to meet
the needs of the community, more on children, youth and families.
• It is also a systematic process for determining and addressing needs or
“gaps” between current conditions and desired conditions or wants.
• COMMUNITY ASSESSMENT
 It is an inventory survey instrument developed to collect information
which will identify the needs of a particular community.
 It serves as a means of establishing a baseline through a systematic
data gathering process.
 Community Needs Assessments seek to gather accurate information
representative of the needs of a community. Assessments are
performed prior to taking action and are used to determine current
situations and identify issues for action, establishing the essential
foundation for vital planning. The process is an invaluable tool for
involving the public in solving problems and developing goals. A
needs assessment can be an excellent way for the public to become
involved and contribute to the outcome (Learn to Give Org, 2019).
REASONS FOR COLLECTING INFORMATION ABOUT THE PROBLEM
• 1. Knowledge
• 2. Credibility counts
• 3. Awareness leads to change
Steps in collecting information
• 1. Awareness on the importance and purpose of the information to be
collected
• 2. Determine when you want to use the data
• 3. Determine exactly what you want to know
• 4. Determine who will find the information
• 5. Identify possible sources of information
• 6. Set limits to how much information you want to collect
• 7. Collect the data
• 8. Identify the gaps in your knowledge
• 9. Repeat the process to fill those gaps or collect your own data
• 10. Compare the data of your community with another community
Criteria in identifying community problems
• 1. The problem occurs (the frequency)

• 2. The duration of the problem (did it last for a while?)

• 3. The scope or range (how many people are affected?)

• 4. The severity of the problem (the intense of the effect)

• 5. The equity (how many are deprived of legal or moral rights?)

• 6. The perception (how problem is perceived?)

Reasons why community problems have to be analyzed

• 1. To better identify the problem or issue

• 2. To understand the main reason of the problem

• 3. To determine the barriers and resources associated with addressing the problem

• 4. To develop the best remedy for addressing the problem

How to analyze a community problem

The primordial concern of analyzing the community problem is to understand the problem better and to
handle it more effectively, so the method you use could help you accomplish the goal.

1. Justify the choice of the problem

 Consider the criteria when identifying the problem.

2. Frame the problem primordial

 Be objective in stating the problem without implying a solution

in the development process through the leadership of the NSTP students. It helps the
community to be well-informed, empowered/proactive and build a strong civil society
that could become a valuable partner of the government in shaping a national
development that is equitable and sustainable.
COMMUNITY SERVICE
• Community service is performed by someone or a group of people like NSTP students
for the benefit of the public or community.
• Through community service the students can strengthen their senses of civic

making in society.
• The purpose of the Community Service Program mirrors the mission of the school itself,
that is, to prepare the NSTP students to become responsible, active citizens.
PURPOSE OF COMMUNITY SERVICE
