Recitation Set 12 – October 7

1. A small sample of aluminum metal was dissolved in excess hydrochloric acid in a flask
equipped with an expandable balloon at the neck that captures all of the gas produced. The
reaction generated 2.78 kJ of heat and did 120 J of work expanding the balloon against constant
atmospheric pressure.
a) Write balanced reaction equations in molecular, full ionic, and net ionic forms. Include
expected states of chemicals.
b) Which reactant was reduced, and which one was oxidized?
c) What are the heat q and work w of this reaction?
d) What are the changes in internal energy ∆E and enthalpy ∆H of the system?
e) What type of system (open, closed, or isolated) is the flask with the balloon as described in
this problem?

2. Consider the following reaction: C3H8(g) + 8O2(g) → 3CO2(g) + 4H2O(l), ΔH = -2220 kJ

a) Is this reaction exothermic or endothermic?
b) What could be the final temperature of the system to ensure the given physical states of the
products?
b) Calculate the amount of heat produced when 2.00 g of propane gas reacts with excess oxygen
according to the above thermochemical equation.
c) How many grams of CO2 are produced if the amount of heat produced is 196 kJ?

3. Consider the following reactions:

H2(g) + F2(g) → 2HF(g), ΔH = -537 kJ; C(s) + 2F2(g) → CF4(g), ΔH = -680. kJ
Suppose a 1.00 g sample of a mixture of hydrogen and carbon was reacted with excess fluorine
to produce 117 kJ of heat. How many grams of hydrogen were present initially in the mixture?
Assume the atomic weights of H and C as 1.0 and 12.0 amu, respectively, and give the final
answer to two significant figures.
