TASK 1: Write down the experimental design for the investigations below. You may
solve one question per week.

1. Design 1:
Seeds contain starch as a store of energy. Amylase in the seeds catalyzes the break-
down of the stored starch into reducing sugars. Seeds use the reducing sugars to
provide some of the energy required for germination.
Plan an investigation to find out how temperature affects the activity of amylase in
germinating seeds.

2. Design 2:
A student wanted to find out how temperature might affect the germination of seeds.
Design an investigation to help the student.

3. Design 3:
Design an experiment to investigate the effect of temperature OR humidity on the
rate of water absorption by a leafy shoot.

4. Design 4:
Both flies and bees are attracted to coloured flowers. Design an investigation to find
out which colours attract more bees than flies.

5. Design 5
Flowers produce a sugar solution so that a pollen tube can grow.
A student is planning an investigation to find out how the concentration of sugar
solution might affect the rate of growth of pollen tubes. Design an investigation to
help the student.

6. Design 6
A student wanted to investigate the amount of catalase present in different food
plants. Describe a method the student could use to carry out this investigation.

TASK 2:
Go through all the chapters and make a list of definitions you need to know in each
chapter. Learn them as you write down. You may also go through the syllabus (code 0610)
