GALOPO Modern Geometry

Activity 2.1

For our activity-based discussion next meeting, please perform the following
activities in advance. There are many ways the task can be done; I will appreciate
it very much if the outputs will manifest a variety of possibilities. Thanks.

1. Perform transformations on the movable blue quadrilateral until

it matches quadrilateral JHCT.

Possible Answers:

a) Reflection along the line y = 0 (or x-axis) →Translation by a vector of 1 unit to

the right → Dilation from a point by a factor of ½

b) Reflection along the line y = 0 (or x-axis) →Dilation from a point by a factor of
½ → Translation by a vector of 1 unit to the right

Transformation 2

Other possibilities are

c) Dilation from a point by a factor of ½ → Translation by vector of 1 unit to the
right → Reflection along the line y = 0 (or x-axis).
d) Dilation from a point by a factor of ½ → Reflection along the line y = 0 (or x-
axis) → Translation by vector of 1 unit to the right.
e) Translation by vector of 1 unit to the right → Dilation from a point by a factor
of ½ → Reflection along the line y = 0 (or x-axis).
f) Translation by vector of 1 unit to the right → Reflection along the line y = 0 (or
x-axis)→Dilation from a point by a factor of ½ .

2. Perform a series of transformations on the following triangles so

that one triangle superimposes the other.

a)

Possible Answers:

We take the black triangle ABC as the movable triangle and does
transformations until it superimposes the blue triangle A’B’C’.

1. Reflection about line y = 1 and then Translation by a vector of

8 units to the right.

3. Reflection about line x = 1 and then a Rotation around a point

180 degrees either clockwise or counterclockwise.

b)

Possible Answers:
We take the green triangle PME as the movable triangle and does
transformations until it superimposes the pink triangle NRC.

1. Translation by a vector of 6 units to the right and then a

Rotation about a point 90 degrees in clockwise direction.

2. Rotation about a point 90 degrees in clockwise direction and

then translation by a vector of 6 units to the right.

3. Reflection about a line y=1 → Rotation about a point (E’) 90

degrees in clockwise direction → Reflection about the line x =
0 (or x-axis).
