NETFLIX :

Netflix has been one of the most successful dot-com ventures. Netflix offers its customers the flexibility of
renting DVD with no late fees and the privilege to customers of not having to move from their couch to
watch their favorite movies. Netflix, Inc. provides online movie rental subscription service in the United
States to approximately 12 million subscribers.

It utilizes e-commerce to its utmost potential. It rents DVDs via the Internet and sends them to you
through the U.S. Postal Service in a prepaid mailing envelope. For a flat fee per month, you can build a
list of movies at the Netflix.com Website that you want delivered to your home. Customers can also
stream movies on their PC’s , TV, Gaming consoles, Handheld devices etc. Customers can select titles
for with the help of ratings and recommendations , which are provided by users themselves. This gives
them an edge in competing with newcomers. IT forms a core part of the business model. They use IT to
streamline their supply chain to provide delivery and return facility to its subscribers, till this date it has
over 100 shipping centers all over USA. Also it provides dynamic queue option by which every member
of a family can edit their movie queues and can also maintain parallel queues.

Collaborating with entertainment industry, consumer-electronics industry helps it to reach to a wider

audience. Netflix promotes itself with the help of various marketing campaigns, online advertising, third
party promotions, etc. Go to any number of movie sites and you will find banner ads for Netflix
registration. With the emergence of live streaming media being touted as the next big thing, Netflix has an
early mover advantage and is bound to grow.

However their recent dealings with studios to delay renting the movies by 28 days to allow studios to have
more physical sale of DVD’s can be seen as a minor glitch resulting in some amount of customer attrition.
But statistics show that DVD subscription by mail will dry up in few years and all the content will be
accessed via streaming, Netflix is positioned in a very healthy environment to support and provide these
services.

UPS :

UPS is much more than a package-delivery company. It's certainly that but it also develops and markets
enterprise-level software; offers consulting services for global logistics, supply chain, and more; is the
world's 9th-largest and most fuel-efficient airline; and has recently become a leading voice in
environmental-sustainability efforts that have massive business impact by lowering costs, increasing
efficiencies, sparking innovation, and being extendable out to customers.

UPS’s technology strategy is the same as the business strategy, which is being pursued by the 5000+
strong IT staff. Its Parcel Network is based on a hub and spoke model. UPS operates centers that feed
parcels to hubs where parcels are sorted and forwarded to their destinations. It is constantly thriving to
pursue sustainable business practices and become environment friendly through the use of its IT. For e.g.
UPS has programmed its GPS systems in such a way that its trucks never have to turn left during the
daytime which saves lot of fuel, reduces costs and creates an image of being customer and environment
friendly in the eyes of its customers. The technology-based efforts have been behind the wide-ranging
initiatives to improve business performance while simultaneously consuming less fossil fuel, lowering
emissions, and weaving those concepts into the company's core strategy and operating principles.

As a part of its IT strategy it provides businesses developer kits and Quantum view to customize
processes as required by the needs of the organizations. It handles the massive 18.5 million daily on-line
tracking requests very effectively, by providing real time results.

The technology-based efforts have been behind the wide-ranging initiatives to improve business
performance while simultaneously consuming less fossil fuel, lowering emissions, and weaving those
concepts into the company's core strategy and operating principles.

With its ever growing global operations and maximizing use of its core IT competencies in providing
businesses optimal logistics and supply chain solutions, UPS has a bright future ahead.

Walmart :

The power and size of the company enables it to realize its goals with ruthless efficiency. Walmart uses
Business intelligence to control the power of massive customer and transaction data
warehouses. Predictive analytics is the key component of the business intelligence at Wal-Mart, helping
retailers understand future trends based on past performance and missed opportunities. This helps Wal-
Mart to be proactive and responsive to customer’s demands rather than being reactive. Wal-Mart’s aim of
meeting customer demands and increasing operational efficiencies are the top motivation behind Wal-
Mart’s BI initiatives.  Business intelligence is used to alert the home office and store managers to
performance anomalies, allowing them to react quickly, before customers are affected. The extended
point of service is a new generation of modular applications, driven by real-time business intelligence-
generated data and delivered across broadband networks directly into users’ hands. Assume that you
purchase a flashlight at Wal-Mart. The cash register reads the bar code price tag and reportedly within
fourteen seconds, the Wal-Mart central warehouse is notified that the Wal-Mart retail store needs a new
flashlight for the shelf to replenish the purchased item. Further, the manufacturer is also notified that the
Wal-Mart central warehouse needs a new flashlight. Even the raw material suppliers are notified that the
manufacturer now needs a little more raw material and so it goes – all the way up the supply chain.

It uses data mining and analysis to plan the products which should be stacked besides one another to
increase customer satisfaction and drive its growth of sales.

Wal-Mart has pushed the retail industry to establish the universal bar code, which forced manufacturers to
adopt common labeling. The bar allowed retailers to generate all kinds of information -- creating a subtle
shift of power from manufacturers to retailers. Wal-Mart is especially good at exploiting the information
behind the bar code and is considered a pioneer in developing sophisticated technology to track its
inventory and cut the fat out of its supply chain.

Wal-Mart became the first major retailer to demand manufacturers use radio frequency identification
technology (RFID). The technology uses radio frequencies to transmit data stored on small tags attached
to pallets or individual products. RFID tags hold significantly more data than bar codes. Wal-Mart recently
acquired VUDU Inc., in an attempt to expand its portfolio in the field of online home entertainment and
information delivery to enhance its portfolio of products.

Wal-Mart was ranked no.4 by Gartner Research in the 2010 top 25 Supply Chain companies making vital
impacts on their business by embedding product and process innovation in supply chain operations and
consciously managing and shaping demand from a customer, production and fulfillment standpoint

Amazon :

IT and Internet are synonymous with Amazon. It needed a heavy upscaling in terms of IT infrastructure
and IT strategy to get to the position where they are now, considering Amazon.com started from a
garage. After starting with a simple website that sold books online, it now offers a huge diversity of
products, from books and other physical goods to an e-commerce platform, cloud computing services,
Kindle e-books and readers, and now, mobile applications. It has numerous patents on ecommerce
processes and technology is at the center of everything that Amazon does.

Internet is the core of Amazon's business model. Amazon uses personalization to “build the right store for
every customer.”  Each customer has a Web page personalized based on his or her recent purchases.
This is the equivalent of having a unique storefront for each customer in hopes of drawing in as many
return customers as possible. This is done by simply using statistical probabilities and all the data at their
disposal tempt you into disregarding your budget and spending more money at Amazon.com. Amazon
has a lot of data passing through its servers on a daily basis. Once you collect it and store it, you then
have the third and most complicated situation: working with the massive volumes of information.
Technology and business intelligence is what makes it different from other e-commerce Web sites and
how its technology infrastructure supports its multi-layered approach to online sales. The innovation and
business savvy that sustains Amazon.com is commendable.  Customer tracking is an Amazon
stronghold. It has also pioneered “ 1–click” ordering system.

The Future : Amazon Web-Store is a comprehensive, full-featured ecommerce product that enables
companies of all sizes to build and operate an ecommerce business. Amazon Web-Store provides
capabilities for managing every aspect from design and merchandising, to catalog and inventory
management, to checkout and payment processing with fraud protection. Along with the above
capabilities and services with names such as Elastic Computer Cloud (renting out computing capacity,
e.g. Oracle is already using it) and simple Storage Service (renting data storage). Essentially, Amazon is
renting everything it does to anyone who wants it, from big corporations to sole proprietors; it has a strong
future ahead.

complex environments. With a proven value proposition, the payback time for a service provider

percent of these costs is significant. InnoPath has targeted the biggest call drivers with solutions
addressing some of the most expensive and time consuming cases.

Innopath is likely to go public with its IPO offering and I believe it has the potential to sustain its growth.
Smartphones are likely to be the
