The Divine Liturgy of Our Father Among The Saints John Chrysostom

(Prayers and Psalms are chanted before the Liturgy commences.)
Priest: He stands before the Holy Table and prays quietly, saying:
Heavenly King and Comforter, Spirit of truth, present everywhere, filling the universe; Treasury
of goodness and Giver of life: come and dwell in us, and cleanse us from every stain of sin. And save
our souls, O gracious One.
Then he makes three low bows, saying:
+ Glory to God in the highest, and on earth peace, good will to all people. (Thrice)
He lifts up his hands, saying:
O Lord, open my lips; and my mouth shall proclaim Your praise. (Twice)
(The People stand when the bells are rung)
Priest: He lifts up the book of the Gospels with both hands, and makes the sign of the Cross with it over the Antimins,
saying in a clear voice:
+ Blessed is the Kingdom of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit, now and
for ever, and to the ages of ages.
He then kisses the book of the Gospels and places it on the Antimins.
People: Amen.
(The People may sit)
THE GREAT LITANY OF PEACE
Priest: In peace, let us pray to the Lord.
People: Lord, have mercy.
Priest: For the peace, which comes from on high, and for the salvation of our souls, let us pray
to the Lord.
People: Lord, have mercy.
Priest: For the peace of the whole world, for the welfare of the holy Churches of God, and for
the gathering into one of all things, let us pray to the Lord.
People: Lord, have mercy.
Priest: For this holy house, and for those who enter it with faith, reverence and fear of God, let
us pray to the Lord.
People: Lord, have mercy.
Priest: For all devout and Orthodox Christians, let us pray to the Lord.
People: Lord, have mercy.
Priest: For our Father and Metropolitan Paul, for the venerable Priesthood, for the
Diaconate in Christ, for all the clergy and the people, let us pray to the Lord.
People: Lord, have mercy.
Priest: For Her Majesty the Queen, the Governor General, those in Government and
Opposition, all civil authorities and our Armed Forces everywhere, let us pray to
the Lord.
People: Lord, have mercy.
Priest: For this city, for every city and land, and for the faithful who dwell in them, let us
pray to the Lord.
People: Lord, have mercy.
Priest: For favourable weather, for abundance of the fruits of the earth, and for peaceful times,
let us pray to the Lord.

Priest: For those who travel by sea, by land, by air, for the sick and the suffering, for those in
captivity, and for their salvation, let us pray to the Lord.
People: Lord, have mercy.
Priest: For our deliverance from all affliction, wrath, danger and necessity, let us pray to the
Lord.
People: Lord, have mercy.
Priest: Help us, save us, have mercy on us, and keep us, O God, by Your grace.

Priest: + Commemorating our all-holy, pure, most blessed and glorious Lady, the ‘Theotokos’
(Birthgiver of God) and Ever-Virgin Mary, with all the Saints, let us entrust ourselves
and one another and our whole life to Christ our God.

+ Forto You belong all glory, honour, and worship; to the Father, and to the Son, and to
the Holy Spirit, now and for ever, and to the ages of ages.

THE SECOND ANTIPHON
Glory be to the Father and to the Son and to the Holy Spirit.
Praise the Lord O my soul, while I live I will praise the Lord; while I have any being I will sing praises to my God. Put
not your trust in princes, nor in the sons of men who cannot save. For when their breath goes from them, they return
again to the earth, and on that day all their thoughts perish. The Lord shall be king forever: your God O Zion shall
reign through all generations.
Both now and forever and to the ages of ages, Amen.
Only begotten Son and immortal Word of God, Who for our salvation condescended to be incarnate of the Holy Theotokos
and ever virgin Mary; Who without change became man, and was crucified, trampling down death by death. O Christ our God,
one of the Holy Trinity, glorified with the Father and the Holy Spirit, save us.
SHORT LITANY
Priest: Again and again in peace, let us pray to the Lord.
People: Lord, have mercy.
Priest: Help us, save us, have mercy on us, and keep us, O God, by Your grace.

Priest: He says this prayer quietly:
Prayer of the Third Antiphon
You have given us grace at this time with one heart and voice to offer You our prayers; and You have promised
that when two or three are gathered together in Your name You will grant their requests. Fulfil now, O Lord, the
desires and petitions of Your servants, as may be best for them, granting us in this world knowledge of Your truth,
and in the world to come, life everlasting.
Priest: Aloud:
+ For You are good, O God, and the Lover of mankind, and to You we ascribe glory; to
the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Spirit, now and for ever, and to the ages of
ages.
People: Amen.
People: In Your kingdom remember us O Lord, when You come into Your kingdom.
Blessed are the poor in spirit, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven.
Blessed are those who mourn, for they shall be comforted.
Blessed are the meek, for they shall inherit the earth.
Blessed are those who hunger and thirst for righteousness, for they shall be satisfied.
Blessed are the merciful, for they shall obtain mercy.
Blessed are the pure in heart, for they shall see God.
Blessed are the peacemakers, for they shall be called sons of God.
Blessed are those who are persecuted for righteousness’ sake, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven.
Blessed are you when men revile you and persecute you, and utter all kinds of evil against you falsely on My account.
Rejoice and be glad for your reward is great in heaven.
While the People sing the Refrain of the Third Antiphon, the Priest makes three low bows, takes up the book of the
Gospels, and preceded by the taper-bearers, proceeds around the Holy Table and out by the north door for the
Little Entrance.
While the People are singing the Thrice Holy Hymn, the Priest reads the following Prayer, quietly:
Then the Priest censes the Holy Table from all four sides, the Prothesis, the Holy Icons, the People and then the
Sanctuary and those present in it.
After the People have finished singing: “Holy God…” the Priest moves to the Royal Door, faces the People, and
says aloud:
Priest: Aloud:
+That being always guarded by Your might, we may ascribe glory to You; to the Father,
and to the Son, and to the Holy Spirit, now and for ever, and to the ages of ages.
People: Amen.
(The People stand)
The following part of the Cherubic Hymn is sung (with repeats):
People: Let us who mystically represent the Cherubim and sing the thrice-holy hymn to the life-creating Trinity, now lay aside all earthly
cares.

Meanwhile the Priest says the Prayer of the Cherubic Hymn quietly:
For You alone, Lord our God, are Ruler over all things in heaven and on earth, mounted on the throne of
the Cherubim, Lord of the Seraphim and King of Israel, the only Holy One, resting in the holy place.
Therefore I entreat You, Who alone are good and ready to hear: Look upon me, Your sinful and
unprofitable servant, and purify my soul and heart from an evil conscience. By the power of Your
Holy Spirit enable me, clothed with the grace of the priesthood, to stand at this Your Holy Table and
celebrate the mystery of Your holy and most pure Body and Your precious Blood.
For to You I come, bowing my head and praying: Do not turn away Your face from me, nor reject me
from among Your children, but count me, Your sinful and unworthy servant, worthy to offer these
gifts to You. For You are the One Who offers and is offered, Who receives and is distributed, Christ our
God, + and to You we ascribe glory, together with Your Father, Who is without beginning, and Your all-
holy, and good, and life-giving Spirit, now and for ever, and to the ages of ages. Amen.
After the prayer the Priest says the Cherubic Hymn three times:
We, who mystically represent the Cherubim and sing the thrice-holy hymn to the life-giving Trinity, let
us now lay aside every care of this life. (He makes a low bow) For we are about to receive the King of all,
invisibly escorted by the angelic hosts. Alleluia, alleluia, alleluia.
Then he censes around the Holy Table and the Prothesis Table, saying the following Troparia quietly:
You were in the tomb in the body, and in hell in the spirit because You are God; and in paradise with
the thief, yet on the throne with the Father and the Spirit, O Christ, present everywhere, filling the
universe.
+ Glory to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Spirit.
Your life-giving tomb, O Christ, is revealed to us, more radiant than paradise, lovelier by far than any
royal chamber, the source of our resurrection.
Both now and for ever, and to the ages of ages. Amen.
Rejoice, you who are made holy to be a dwelling for the Most High, for through you, O Theotokos,
came joy to those who cry out; blessed are you amongst women, most holy Lady.
Then he stands in the Royal Door, saying quietly:
+ Come let us worship and fall down before Christ our King and our God. (Thrice)
Then he censes the holy Icons and the People, quietly saying Psalm 50 (51) (Please remember that this Psalm is
not read from Pascha until its leave-taking):
Psalm 50 (51)
Have mercy upon me, O God, according to Your loving-kindness; according to the multitude of Your
tender mercies, blot out my transgressions. Wash me thoroughly from my iniquity, and cleanse me
from my sin. For I acknowledge my transgressions, and my sin is always before me. Against You, You
only, have I sinned, and done this evil in Your sight - that You may be found just when You speak, and
blameless when You judge. Behold, I was brought forth in iniquity, and in sin my mother conceived me.
Behold, You desire truth in the inward parts, and in the hidden part You will make me to know
wisdom. Purge me with hyssop, and I shall be clean; wash me, and I shall be whiter than snow. Make
me hear joy and gladness, that the bones You have broken may rejoice. Hide Your face from my sins,
and blot out all my iniquities. Create in me a clean heart, O God, and renew a steadfast spirit within me.
Do not cast me away from Your presence, and do not take Your Holy Spirit from me. Restore to me the
joy of Your salvation, and uphold me by Your generous Spirit. Then I will teach transgressors Your
ways, and sinners shall be converted to You. Deliver me from the guilt of bloodshed, O God, the God of
my salvation, and my tongue shall sing aloud of Your righteousness. O Lord, open my lips, and my
mouth shall show forth Your praise. For You do not desire sacrifice, or else I would give it; You do not
delight in burnt offering. The sacrifices of God are a broken spirit, a broken and a contrite heart - these,
O God, You will not despise. Do good in Your good pleasure to Zion; build the walls of Jerusalem. Then
You shall be pleased with the sacrifices of righteousness, with burnt offering and whole burnt offering;
The Priest re-enters the Sanctuary and censes the Holy Table, the Holy Prothesis and all present. Standing before
the Holy Table, he says quietly:
Like the prodigal son, I have sinned against You, O Saviour. Welcome me as I repent, O Father, and
have mercy on me, O God.
With the voice of the publican I cry to You, O Christ my Saviour. Take pity on me as You did on
him, and have mercy on me, O God.
The Priest makes three low bows before the Holy Table and kisses the Antimins. He then turns towards the People
and bows while saying:
Forgive, O God, those who hate us and those who love us.
Then he goes to the Prothesis Table, censes the covered holy Gifts, bows and says:
+ O God, be gracious to me a sinner, and have mercy on me. (Thrice)
Then he takes up the Aer and places it upon his shoulders, saying:
Lift up your hands to the holy Place and bless the Lord.
Then he lifts up the holy Diskarion, saying:
God has gone up with the shout of joy, the Lord with the sound of the trumpet.
Priest: Quietly:
Prayer of Offering
Lord, God almighty, You alone are holy and You accept a sacrifice of praise from those who call on
You with all their heart, accept also the supplication of us sinners, bring us to Your Holy Altar, and
enable us to offer You Gifts and spiritual sacrifices for our sins and for those committed in
ignorance by Your people. Count us worthy to find grace in Your sight, that our sacrifice may be well
pleasing to You and that the good Spirit of Your grace may rest on us and on these gifts here set forth,
and on all Your people.
Priest: Aloud:
+ Through the compassion of Your only-begotten Son, with Whom You are blessed,
together with Your all-holy, good and life-giving Spirit, now and for ever, and to the
ages of ages.
People: Amen.
Priest: Let us love one another, that with one mind we may confess:
People: + Father, Son and Holy Spirit, the Trinity, one in essence and undivided.
The Priest gently waves the open Aer above the holy Gifts while saying, “I believe in one God…”:
THE CREED
All: I believe in one God, Father almighty, Maker of heaven and earth, and of all things visible and invisible.
And in one Lord, Jesus Christ, the only-begotten Son of God, begotten from the Father before all ages, Light from
Light, true God from true God, begotten not made, one in essence with the Father; through Him all things were made.
For our sake and for our salvation He came down from heaven, and was incarnate of the Holy Spirit and the Virgin Mary
and became man.
And He was crucified also for us under Pontius Pilate, and suffered and was buried;
And He rose again on the third day, in accordance with the Scriptures,
And ascended into heaven, and is seated at the right hand of the Father.
He is coming again in glory to judge the living and the dead, and His kingdom will have no end.
And I believe in the Holy Spirit, the Lord, the Giver of Life, Who proceeds from the Father, Who together with the Father
and the Son is worshiped and glorified, Who spoke through the Prophets.
I believe in one Holy, Catholic and Apostolic Church.
I confess one Baptism for the forgiveness of sins.
I look for the resurrection of the dead,
And the life of the age to come.
People: Amen.
At the words: “And on the third day He rose again” the Priest kisses the Aer, folds it up and places it on the Holy
Table. Then he holds one of the folded covers in his right hand and waves it over the Chalice and Diskarion.
Priest: Let us stand aright; let us stand with fear; let us listen with care, that we may offer the
holy Oblation in peace.
People: A mercy of peace, a sacrifice of praise.
The Priest makes the sign of the Cross over the holy Gifts with the folded cover and places it on the Chalice, while
saying aloud:
Priest: + The grace of our Lord Jesus Christ, and the love of God the Father, and the fellowship
of the Holy Spirit, be with you all. (Blessing the People)
(The People bow their heads)
Priest: Facing the People, he raises his hands and looks heavenward, saying:
Priest: Turning towards the Icon of Christ, he bows his head saying:

With these blessed Powers, Master, Lover of mankind, we also cry aloud and say: Holy are You and all-
holy, You and Your only-begotten Son and Your Holy Spirit; holy are You and all-holy, and magnificent
is Your glory. This is how You loved Your world: You gave Your only-begotten Son, so that whoever
believes in Him might not perish, but have eternal life. And, when He had come and had fulfilled Your
will and purpose for us, in the night in which He was given up, or rather gave Himself up, for the life
of the world, He took bread in His holy, most pure and unblemished hands and, when He had given
thanks, and had blessed, sanctified and broken it, He gave it to His holy Disciples and Apostles, saying:

+ Take, eat; this is my body, which is broken for you, for the forgiveness of sins.
People: Amen.
Priest: Quietly:
In the same way, after supper He took the cup, saying:

Commemorating therefore this our Saviour’s command and all that has been done for us: the Cross, the
Tomb, the Resurrection on the third day, the Ascension into heaven, the Sitting at the right hand, the
Second and glorious Coming again;
The Priest, with his right hand over his left hand, takes the Diskarion in his right hand and the Holy Chalice in his
left, elevating them a little and making the sign of the cross, saying aloud:
Priest: Your own of Your own, we offer You, in all things and for all things.
Then he says aloud:
Also we offer You this spiritual sacrifice without the shedding of blood, and we ask, pray and implore
You: send down Your Holy Spirit upon us and upon these gifts here set forth,
People: Truly it is right to call you blessed, O Theotokos, the ever-blessed and most immaculate mother of our God. More honourable
than the Cherubim, and beyond compare more glorious than the Seraphim, who in purity gave birth to God the Word; True
Theotokos, we magnify.
Priest: And for those who offer these precious and holy gifts to the Lord our God, the
honourable Priesthood, the Diaconate in Christ and every priestly order, and for their
salvation; for the peace and stability of the whole world, the good estate of the holy
churches of God, the salvation and help of the people here present, those whom they are
remembering and of all mankind.
People: Each and every one.
Priest: +And grant that with one voice and one heart we may worship and praise Your great
and glorious name, of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit, now and for
ever, and to the ages of ages.
People: Amen.
Priest: And the mercies of our great God and Saviour, Jesus Christ, shall be with all of you.
(The People bow their heads)
Priest: Having commemorated all the Saints, again and again in peace, let us pray to the Lord.
People: Lord, have mercy.
Priest: For the precious gifts here set forth and made holy, let us pray to the Lord.
People: Lord, have mercy.
Priest: That our God, Who loves mankind, having accepted them on His holy and heavenly
Altar on high, as a fragrant spiritual offering, may send down upon us in return His
divine grace and the gift of the Holy Spirit, let us pray to the Lord.
People: Lord, have mercy.
Priest: For our deliverance from all affliction, wrath, danger and necessity, let us pray to the
Lord.
People: Lord, have mercy.
Priest: Help us, save us, have mercy on us, and keep us, O God, by Your grace.
People: Lord, have mercy.
Priest: Having asked for the unity of the faith and the communion of the Holy Spirit, let us
entrust ourselves and one another and our whole life to Christ, our God.
People: To You, O Lord.
Priest: Quietly:
To You, Master, Lover of mankind, we entrust our whole life and our hope, and we entreat, pray and
implore You: count us worthy to partake of Your heavenly and awesome Mysteries at this sacred and
spiritual Table with a pure conscience, for forgiveness of sins and pardon of offences, for
communion of the Holy Spirit, for inheritance of the Kingdom of heaven and for boldness before You;
not for judgment or condemnation.
Priest: Aloud:
And count us worthy, Master, with boldness and without condemnation to dare to call
upon You, the God of heaven, as Father, and to say:
The Priest and the People say the Lord’s Prayer together:
THE LORD’S PRAYER
All: Our Father in heaven, hallowed be Your Name; Your kingdom come; Your will be done on earth as it is in heaven. Give us
today our daily bread; and forgive us our sins, as we forgive those who sin against us; and lead us not into temptation, but
deliver us from the evil one.
Priest: +For Yours is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory, of the Father, and of the Son,
and of the Holy Spirit, now and for ever, and to the ages of ages.
People: Amen.
We thank You, King invisible, Who by Your boundless power created all things, in the abundance of
Your mercy bringing them into being out of nothing. Look down from heaven, Master, on those who
have bowed their heads before You; for they have bowed not to flesh and blood, but to You, the God
before Whom we stand in awe. Make smooth, then, our path for our good, Master, through what lies
before us, according to the need of each: sail with those who sail by sea, journey with those who travel
by land and air, heal the sick, for You are the physician of our souls and bodies.
Priest: Aloud:
+Through the grace and compassion and love towards mankind of Your only-begotten
Son, with Whom You are blessed, together with Your all-holy, good and life-giving
Spirit, now and for ever, and to the ages of ages.
People: Amen, amen.
THE COMMUNION
The Priest breaks the holy Bread into four parts with great reverence and care, saying quietly:
Priest: The Lamb of God is broken and distributed, broken yet not divided, ever eaten yet never consumed,
but makes holy those who partake.
He arranges the four pieces on the Diskarion in the form of a cross, thus:

Then he takes the top portion IC and makes the sign of the Cross with it over the holy Chalice, before dropping it
in, saying:
Fullness of the Holy Spirit.
Then he takes the warm water from the Acolyte and blesses it, saying:
Blessed is the warmth of Your holy Gifts, always, now and for ever, and to the ages of ages. Amen.
Then he pours a sufficient quantity of the warm water into the Chalice crosswise, saying:
The warmth of faith, full of the Holy Spirit. Amen.
Then the People say the following prayers of preparation for the Holy Communion:
People: I believe, Lord, and I confess that You are truly the Christ, the Son of the living God, Who came into the world to
save sinners, of whom I am first. Also I believe that this is indeed Your most pure Body, and this indeed Your
precious Blood. Therefore I beseech You, have mercy on me and forgive me my offences, voluntary and
involuntary, in word and in deed, in knowledge and in ignorance, and count me worthy to partake
uncondemned of Your most pure Mysteries for forgiveness of sins and for eternal life. Amen.
See, to holy Communion I draw near; You my Maker are fire consuming the unworthy, burn me not as I partake,
but make me clean from every stain.
Then the Troparion:
At Your Mystical Supper, Son of God, receive me today as a communicant; for I will not tell of the Mystery to Your
enemies; I will not give You a kiss, like Judas; but like the Thief I confess You: Remember me, Lord, in Your
Kingdom.
Then this prayer:
Tremble, O mortal, as you look upon the Blood which makes you divine, for it is a burning coal, consuming the
unworthy. The Body of God makes me divine and nourishes me. It makes the spirit divine and wondrously
nourishes the mind.
Then the two Troparia:
You have smitten me with yearning, O Christ, and by Your divine love You have changed me. But with Your
spiritual fire, consume my sins and count me worthy to be filled with delight in You, that leaping for joy, O good
One, I may proclaim the greatness of Your two Comings.
How can I, the unworthy one, enter into the glory of Your Saints? For should I dare to enter the bridal chamber with
them, my clothes betray me, for it is not the wedding garment; and bound I shall be cast out by the Angels. So
cleanse my soul, O Lord, from the stain of sin, and save me by Your love for mankind.
Then this prayer:
Master, Lover of mankind, Lord Jesus Christ, my God, let not these holy Mysteries be for my condemnation
because of my unworthiness, but rather for the cleansing and sanctification of both soul and body, and as a
pledge of the life and kingdom to come. It is good for me to cleave to God, to place in the Lord the hope of my
salvation.
Then they repeat:
At Your Mystical Supper, Son of God, receive me today as a communicant; for I will not tell of the Mystery to Your
enemies; I will not give You a kiss, like Judas; but like the Thief I confess You: Remember me, Lord, in Your
Kingdom.
The following part of the service has already been done by the priest in parallel with the previous part, so the
People should now turn to page 31 to the point where the Priest says, “With fear of God…”
As the Priest approaches to partake, he asks forgiveness of the Priests serving with him, saying:
Priest: Forgive me, my brother(s) who share with me in this service.
After receiving their forgiveness he says:
+ O God, be gracious to me a sinner, and have mercy on me. (Thrice)
Then he approaches the holy Gifts, takes a part of the XC portion, or the whole XC if by himself, and puts it in the
palm of his right hand, saying quietly:
Behold, I draw near to Christ, our King and God.
To me the unworthy Priest N., is granted communion of the precious and all-holy Body of our Lord
and God and Saviour, Jesus Christ, for the forgiveness of my sins and for eternal life, in the name of the
Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit.
He consumes the holy Bread with great reverence and care, saying: Amen, and then he wipes his hand.
Then he approaches to partake of the holy Blood saying:
Behold, I draw near to Christ, our immortal King and God.
To me the unworthy Priest N., is granted communion of the precious and all-holy Blood of our Lord
and God and Saviour, Jesus Christ, for the forgiveness of my sins and for eternal life.
Then he takes three sips of the holy Blood saying after the first sip: In the name of the Father, Amen. After the
second sip: And of the Son, Amen. After the third sip: And of the Holy Spirit, Amen. Then he says immediately:
This has touched my lips: it will take away my iniquities and cleanse my sins.
Then he places the Chalice on the Holy Table, and breaks the remainder of the holy Body (NI and KA) into
small pieces, putting them into the Chalice, saying quietly:
Having seen the Resurrection of Christ, let us bow down before the holy Lord Jesus, the only sinless
one. We venerate Your Cross, O Christ, and we praise and glorify Your holy Resurrection. For
You are our God, and we know no other, and we call upon Your Name. O Come, all you faithful, let us
worship Christ’s holy Resurrection. For through the Cross, joy has come to the whole world. At all
times, blessing the Lord, we praise His Resurrection; for having endured the Cross for us, by His death
He destroyed death.
Shine, shine, O new Jerusalem; for the glory of the Lord has dawned upon You. Rejoice now and be
glad, O Zion; and you, O pure one, Theotokos, rejoice at the Rising-again of your Son.
And how noble! O how precious! O how sweet is Your voice, O Christ; for You have truly promised,
that You will be with us to the end of time; the promise is sure for us who believe, an anchor for our
hope, so we sing rejoicing.
O Christ, the great and most sacred Passover! O Wisdom of God, His Word and His Power, grant that
we may more perfectly have communion with You in the Day of Your Kingdom which knows no
ending.
Then the Priest wipes the remaining particles on the Diskarion into the Chalice, saying:
Wash away, Lord, by Your holy Blood the sins of Your servants here remembered, through the prayers
of the Theotokos and all Your Saints.
Then before the Royal Door is opened, the Priest strikes the Diskarion three times with the Asterisk, moves to the
Door and raises the holy Chalice before the People, saying:
Priest: + With fear of God, with faith and love, draw near.
People: Blessed is He Who comes in the name of the Lord. God is the Lord and has appeared to us.
Then the People come to receive Holy Communion. Meanwhile the following Troparion is sung as many times as
is needed:
Receive the body of Christ, taste the fountain of immortality. Alleluia, alleluia, alleluia.
All who wish to communicate approach the holy Doors, bow before the Chalice, cross their arms over their chest,
say their name and open their mouth. The Priest then gives them the precious Body and Blood using the spoon,
and saying:
Priest: The servant or handmaid of God N., is granted communion of the precious and all-holy Body and Blood
of our Lord and God and Saviour, Jesus Christ, for the forgiveness of sins and for eternal life.
When all have communicated, the Priest covers the Chalice with the veil and blesses the people with his hand,
saying aloud:
Then, with the Chalice above the Diskarion, he turns towards the People saying aloud:
Priest: Always, now and for ever, and to the ages of ages.
People: Amen.
Fill our mouths with your praise O Lord that we may sing of your glory, for you have considered us worthy to partake of your
holy, divine, Immortal and life giving mysteries. Keep us in your holiness that we may meditate on your righteousness all the
day long.
Alleluia, alleluia, alleluia.
Priest: He makes the sign of the Cross with the book of the Gospels over the folded Antimins (Please remember that the
Antimins is not folded from Pascha until its leave-taking), saying aloud:
+ For You are our sanctification, and to You we ascribe glory; to the Father, and to
the Son, and to the Holy Spirit, now and for ever, and to the ages of ages.
He then places the Gospel on the Antimins.
People: Amen.
Priest: Let us go forth in peace.
People: In the name of the Lord.
Priest: Let us pray to the Lord.
People: Lord, have mercy.
The Priest comes out through the Royal Door and stands in front of the icon of Christ, and reads aloud the ‘The
Prayer behind the Ambon’:
Priest: O Lord, You bless those who bless You, and sanctify those who have put their trust in
You: save Your people and bless Your inheritance; protect Your whole Church;
sanctify those who love the beauty of Your House; glorify them in return by Your divine
power, and do not forsake us who hope in You. Give peace to Your world, to Your
churches, to the priests, to our rulers, and to all Your people. For every good and
perfect gift is from on high, coming down from You, the Father of lights;
+ and to You we ascribe glory, thanksgiving and worship, to the Father, and to the Son,
and to the Holy Spirit, now and for ever, and to the ages of ages.
People: Amen.
Blessed be the name of the Lord, from now and for evermore. (Thrice)
The Priest returns to the Sanctuary through the Royal Door, goes to the table of the Prothesis and says, quietly:
Priest: Christ, our God, the fulfilment of the Law and the Prophets, You have fulfilled all the Father’s
dispensation. Fill our hearts with joy and gladness, always, now and for ever, and to the ages of ages.
Amen.
THE BLESSING
+May the blessing of the Lord and His mercy come upon you, through His divine grace
and love for mankind, always, now and for ever, and to the ages of ages.
People: Amen.
THE DISMISSAL
Priest: + Glory to You, Christ our God, our hope, glory to You.
People: + Glory to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Spirit, both now and for ever, and to the ages of ages. Amen.

Priest: He concludes the Liturgy, saying:
May He Who rose from the dead for our salvation, Christ our true God, the Good
Shepherd, to Whom this Church is dedicated, through the intercession of His most pure
Mother, by the power of the precious and life-giving Cross, through the protection of
the honoured, spiritual Powers of heaven, through the supplication of the honoured,
glorious Prophet, Forerunner and Baptist, John, of the holy, glorious and all-praised
Apostles, of the holy, glorious and triumphant Martyrs, of our venerable and God-
bearing Fathers, of our Father among the Saints John Chrysostom, Archbishop of
Constantinople, writer of this holy Service, of the holy and righteous ancestors of God,
Joachim and Anna, of Saint Cuthbert of Lindesfarne, (NN.), whose memory we keep
today, and of all Your Saints, have mercy on us and save us, for He is good and loves
mankind.
May the holy Trinity protect your lives, always; now and for ever, and to the ages of
ages.
People: Amen.
Priest: He turns towards the Icon of Christ and bows his head saying aloud:
+Through the prayers of our holy Fathers, Lord Jesus Christ our God have mercy upon
us and save us.
People: Amen.
At this point the Priest stands on the lowest step of the stairs before the holy Doors, with the hand Cross in his left
hand. He gives the People the Antidoron with his right hand after they have kissed the Cross, and says to each
one:
Priest: May the blessing of the Lord come down upon you.
After the distribution the Priest returns to the Prothesis and consumes what is left of the holy Gifts with reverence
and fear, paying careful attention that not even the smallest particle falls out of, or remains in, the Chalice. He
then washes the Chalice with a little water and drinks it. After wiping the Chalice with the Veil he puts the sponge
in it and washes his hands in the washbasin. After that he says the Thanksgiving Prayer, bows before the Holy
Table, and kisses it, thanking God for every gift, before leaving the Church in peace.
THANKSGIVING AFTER HOLY COMMUNION
Whenever you have had holy communion of the life-giving and transcendent Gifts, at once give
praise and offer heartfelt thanks, and from your soul say fervently to God:

May Your holy Body, Lord Jesus Christ, our God, bring me eternal life, and Your
precious Blood forgiveness of sins. May this Eucharist bring me joy, health and
gladness; and at Your dread Second Coming make me, a sinner, worthy to stand at the
right hand of Your glory, through the intercession of Your all-pure Mother and of all

ABOUT THIS SERVICE BOOK
In this service book most of the instructions are in italics. E.g., on page 2; ‘The cross symbol ‘+’ is for
the Faithful to cross themselves’.
Some instructions are in brackets. Eg., on page 2; (The People stand). You may notice some people
standing after the instruction (The People may sit). This is because it is a tradition in many Orthodox
Churches for the young and healthy to stand for the whole service. Do feel free to sit where it says you
may. It is a long time to stand if you are not used to it.
In the left hand margin there are instructions about who says what follows; e.g. ‘PRIEST’ or
‘PEOPLE’. The term ‘PEOPLE’ is used rather than ‘CHOIR’ because we wish to encourage everyone to
sing praises to God. The Choir has an important role in leading us in worship but it is not performing for
us. So you are encouraged to join in. You will be surprised at how easy it is to learn the tunes, but it may
take a few services so persevere! When a Deacon is present he says some of the ‘PRIEST’ parts.
In addition to the instructions given in this service book, there is an accompanying sheet containing
the variables in the day’s service. This changes every week and you should ensure that you have one.
You will notice that some sections of the service are shaded. This is to indicate the parts that the Priest
prays quietly, usually in parallel with other prayers or songs by the people. So, for example on page 2, the
first words of the Liturgy that you will actually hear are those in the prayer on the lower part of the page;
“Blessed is the kingdom ………….”
Another example is the shaded prayer on page 4, which is said by the Priest while the people are saying
the Litany on pages 1-4.
All are welcome to come forward at the end of the service to kiss the cross and to partake of the blessed
bread. Communion may only be given to those who are members of the Orthodox Church. Please talk
with the Priest if you would like to prepare to be received into the Orthodox Faith.
We pray that these instructions will enable you to worship God, aided by this beautiful Liturgy of Saint
John Chrysostom (347-407), used by Orthodox Christians around the world for many centuries.
