Saint Kevin's Story

Known in Ireland as Coemgen, Caoimhghin, Coemgenus, Kavin as well as Kevin.

Saint Kevin was born in 498 at the Fort of the White Fountain in Leinster,
Ireland, of royal descent.

He was baptised by St. Cronan and educated by St. Petroc.

He lived in the Valley of the Two Lakes in Glendalough.

St. Kevin went to Disert-Coemgen, where he attracted many disciples, and then
moved to Glendalough. There, he established his permanent foundation, which
included relics from his pilgrimage to Rome.

St. Kevin loved animals and nature, in which many of the miracles and stories
surrounding him involve them.

He was a friend of St. Kieran of Clonmacnois, who was known as one of the
‘Twelve Apostles of Ireland’. St. Kevin was entrusted by the King Colman of Ui
Faelain to raise his son, Faelan.

St. Patrick prophesized that one person would come and evangelize the region of
Ireland, just south of Dublin. St. Kevin was believed to be that person.

Many extravagant miracles were connected to St. Kevin. He was reputed to be

120 years old at his death.
