TEXT COMPREHENSION
I used to think I could quit checking my e-mail any time I wanted to, but I stopped kidding myself years ago.
My e-mail program is up and running 24 hours a day, and once I submit to its siren call, whole hours can go missing. I
have a friend who recently found herself stuck on a cruise ship near Panama that didn’t offer e-mail, so she chartered
a helicopter to take her to the nearest Internet café. There was nothing in her queue but junk mail and other spam, but
she thought the trip was worth it. I know how she felt. You never know when you’re going to get that note from Uncle
Eric about your inheritance. Or that White House dinner invitation with a time-sensitive R.S.V.P.

Facial expressions are not universal
The reading of facial expressions may not be universal√. This is the conclusion of features
focus
researchers from Glasgow University in Scotland. They report√ that people from different report
cultures read facial expressions differently. In particular, they said there were big favor
scan
differences between the way√ Westerners and East Asians interpret facial expressions. The universal
study suggests East Asians focus√ mostly on people’s eyes to read an emotion, but way
equal
Europeans and Americans scan√ the whole face. Researcher Rachael Jack said: ''We show
that Easterners and Westerners look at different face features√ to read facial expressions.''
She added: "Westerners look at the eyes and the mouth in equal√ measure, whereas
Easterners favor√ the eyes and neglect the mouth."
Ms. Jack suggested there are similarities√ in interpreting facial expressions and the use√
comes
of emoticons. She said East Asians use the eyes in emoticons to show√ emotion, for
use
example ^_^ means happy and ;_; is sad. Westerners, however, use the mouth. For show
cyberspace
example :) is for happy and :( is for sad. She added: “Interestingly, there are clear√ cultural
lost similarities
differences in the formations of these icons. Emoticons are used to convey different findings clear
emotions in cyberspace√ as they are the iconic representation of facial expressions.” The
researchers said their findings√ showed intercultural communication is more complicated
than we thought. They said: "When it comes√ to communicating emotions across cultures,
Easterners and Westerners will find themselves lost√ in translation."

I don’t think children should use the internet by themselves. √ They must be watched by an adult,by a
responsible person because the child √ is not mature to know about the dangers in the internet. There are all sorts
of bad people like pedophiles, thieves, liars, etc. A parent should always be present at the moment the child tried
to communicate with someone. √He or she should know who the child is talking to, and in case of doubt about the
person, keep the child aware of the danger and away from the screen. √
