I. Introduction

1.1 Background of the Study

There are a lot of mosquitoes in the area where especially in stores’ seafood’s,
like in Playda’s Residence, where we are all bothered in such an uncomfortable situation.
Mosquitoes are present in almost all areas such as public markets, restaurants, and in
households. Also, it leads to deadly diseases such as Dengue and Malaria.

Nowadays, people use Baygon as mosquito repellent it is indeed effective. it


doesn’t just repel mosquitoes rather it kills. Yet it still affects human’s health for its fragrance,
like too much exposure of this chemical can lead to dizziness, headache, nausea, fatigue,
vomiting , skin and eye irritation.

The study addresses the problem of spreading of mosquitoes in an area. With


the presence of Peppermint Oil (Mentha x pepipirita) which are hated by mosquitoes. The
percentage of mosquitoes in a particular place will eventually decrease.

1.2 Statement of the Problem

This study aims to determine the effectiveness of peppermint oil used as mosquito
repellent.

1.3 Research Questions

General research Questions:

 What makes this organic mosquito repellent effective?


 What is the effect on the percentage of mosquitoes when sprayed by the repellent?
 What is in peppermint oil that repels mosquitoes?
1.4 Research Hypothesis

Null Hypothesis:

 If the organic mosquito repellent is applied, then it has no effect on mosquitoes’


percentage.

Alternative Hypothesis:

 If the organic mosquito repellent is applied, then it affects the percentage of


mosquitoes.

1.5 Significance of the Study

The study will benefit the following groups of people if the product is effective:
household, the repellent will be very useful in household chores to prevent the spread of
mosquitoes inside and outside the house .Secondly are businessmen, to have a mosquito-free
store, for example in restaurants, karinderias, and in any public eateries. Thirdly, are market
vendors, these are the most common problems of public market vendors, mosquitoes or
insects. This study could help them lessen their concerns with mosquitoes and obtain a fresh
display.

1.6 Scope and Delimitations

The research attempts to determine the effectiveness of Peppermint Oil (Mentha x


pepipirita) as Mosquito Repellent. The present study will be conducted in the researcher’s
residence specifically Sta. Cruz,

Balamban, Cebu. Primarily the focus of this study is to test the effectiveness of peppermint oil
as a mosquito repellent disregarding the intention of killing mosquitoes. Because that is beyond
the capability of the substance. In addition, the study does not focus on the cure of health
problems brought by mosquitoes such as dengue and malaria.
