Introductory Message
Welcome to Mathematics 10!

The Learning Activity Sheet is a product of the collaborative efforts

of the Schools Division of Guimaras and DepEd Regional Office VI - Western
Visayas through the Curriculum and Learning Management Division
(CLMD). This is developed to guide the learning facilitators (teachers,
parents and responsible adults) in helping the learners meet the standards
set by the K to 12 Basic Education Curriculum.

The Learning Activity Sheet is self-directed instructional materials

aimed to guide the learners in accomplishing activities at their own pace and
time using the contextualized resources in the community. This will also
assist the learners in acquiring the lifelong learning skills, knowledge and
attitudes for productivity and employment.

For learning facilitator:

The Mathematics 10 Learning Activity Sheet will help you facilitate the
teaching-learning activities specified in each Most Essential Learning Competency
(MELC) with minimal or no face-to-face encounter between you and learner. This
will be made available to the learners with the references/links to ease the
independent learning.

For the learner:

The Mathematics 10 Learning Activity Sheet is developed to help you

continue learning even if you are not in school. This learning material provides you
with meaningful and engaging activities for independent learning. Being an active
learner, carefully read and understand the instructions then perform the activities
and answer the assessments. This will be returned to your facilitator on the agreed
schedule.

Illustrating Secants, Tangents, Segments, and

Sectors of a Circle

I. Learning Competency with Code

Illustrate secants, tangents, segments, and sectors of a circle (M10GE-IIe-1)

II. Background Information for Learners

You have learned already the terms related to circle. At this point, you
will focus on how to illustrate secants, tangents, segments, and sectors of a
circle. Deep understanding of these concepts will help you facilitate learning
in other fields like physics, astronomy, construction and many more.

Study the following illustrations below.

What have you observed?

• In Figure 1, the line does not intersect a circle.

Whenever a line intersects a circle, it could be at one point or any two

points within the circle as illustrated in Figures 2 and 3.

• In Figure 2, the line intersects at point A of the circle. Hence, the line is
called tangent. Tangent means a line that intersects a circle at exactly
one point and the point of intersection is known as the point of
tangency.

• In Figure 3, line m intersects the circle at point B and point C. A line

that intersects any two points of the circle is called secant. Thus, line m
or line BC is a secant.

B
Sector of a circle
A C
Figure 4

• In Figure 4, the shaded region which is ABC is a sector of a circle. It is

the region bounded by an arc of the circle and the two radii to the
endpoints of the arc. The shaded region is named as sector ABC.

O Segment of a circle

Figure 5
D

• In Figure 5, the shaded region represents segment of a circle. It is the

region bounded by the intercepted arc of the circle and the chord.

Activity 1

A. Instructions: Study further on the important notes on tangents and

secants pages 183-185 of Mathematics 10 Learner’s Module.

B. Do Activity 7: Try to Fit! On page 206 of Mathematics 10 Learner’s Module.

Answer only number 1. Use a separate sheet of paper for your answer if
needed.

Activity 2

A. Tell whether the shaded region illustrates segment or sector of a circle. Write
SEG if it illustrates a segment of a circle and SEC if it illustrates sector of a
circle. Use a separate sheet of paper for your answer if needed.

4. 5.

B. Study the figure below and tell which line illustrates a secant or a
tangent of the circle. Write S for secants and T for tangents. Use
additional sheet of paper for your answers if needed.
